Ok people say canada has medicare? Big fuckin deal. Waiting in a hosipital for 6 hours for an emergency is not what I call an advantage. In the states you pay lower taxes and you pay for your medicare and you get treated. Why? Because they have the bucks. Canada has no doctors. Why? Allow an old timer to put in his 2 cents (or my $0.004 if you prefer).

I was born and grew up in London England. Moved to LA and lived there for 16 years then moved to Montreal 3 years ago.

Why? I have 2 kids - 3 & 4 years old. When they started putting metal detectors in the high school doors to stop kids taking weapons into the schools I knew it was time for me to find a new place to raise my kids.

Taxes are high here - sure. But what do we get in return? We live in a very safe country, people are probably the nicest in the world, insurance is very very reasonable since people don't have the opportunity to file fake law suits for minor accidents ( I was paying $118 / month (US) for auto insurance with $300k liab, $500 deductable now i pay $53 canadian with $2 mill liab and $250 deductable for the same car, standard of living is the highest in the world, we don't have drug/gang problems, housing is downright cheap (rental or purchase). A 1 bedroom in the LA area now runs for $850 - $900/ month, with that kinda money you can rent a 3 bedroom house here. We don't pay for water usage here (another savings of over $200 (US) / month), yes petrol is expensive compared to LA, about 2-3 times the price, but distances here are so small we end up paying less for petrol anyway.

Cost of living here is so low compared to LA, without all the problems associated with living in LA that you can not compare the two fairly. And oh yes, we also don't have earthquakes (if you have lived thru a 6.7 like the Northridge quake, that alone would make you move back).

On top of these and a bunch of other stuff that would take too long to list (as if this post isn't long already), we get to earn our living in US currency and get to spend Canadian currency - how can you beat that?

Move to the US, and in addition to all the higher costs of living you will encounter, you will also shoot yourself in the pocket by forgoing the 1.00:1.47 currency conversion rate - not too smart in my book.

The only thing that is holding back Quebec from the rest of Canada is Quebec’s global mentality. I think we should take a look at both sides of the fences.
