I have people on ICQ every day asking for a copy of my script. And i dont know if i should sell it or give it away for free or keep it for myself. So im posting this msg just to find out what you think about it.


here are the basic characteristics for the scipt:
1. written in perl 5
2. it can track productivity
3. trade unique hits
4. easy to understand admin page
5. hits tracked by the $ENV{'QUERY_STRING'} variable

in other words its simple and fast and can handle quite good amounts of traffic, but of course you have in mind that im talking about a perl script, so it is not as fast as PHP or C...I use it for a month already and dont have any problems.

Pls post all the comments you got about the idea of selling the script, it all depends on you now.

I think you shouldn't give it away. Too many new cj sites will appear, and will suck out the fresh traffic everyone's bringing in. I think it was richard who said it, "it's the $2k that keeps the newbies away."

Some comments:

Its in perl, without mod_perl it wont be able to handle large loads. (does it use flat files or a database server?)

Please dont give it away - at least not to everyone who wants it. Slightly different giving a copy to some mates etc than having it available to download from a site.

All the scripts written in C are hard to rip off, because they are compiled onto that OS, etc etc. You will want to make sure that you have some kind of anti-pirating setup included - even something basic like installing a check file somewhere on their disk.

If you do decide to sell, (no offence run) it doesnt look from the feature list that is as powerful as blindio or ucj. You would have to then set the price to a realistic level - $2k would be too much.

Anyone can write a script, and selling it is easy. The problems begin when you need to support people. Do you offer free upgrades? 24hr support? etc etc. Support is always a real bitch.

of course, its not as powerfull as ucj and blindio because of many reasons. And im not planning to sell it for $2K. Id give it away for $300 i think. The supprot would not be included here. But i agree to install it, which really takes 2-5 minutes.

For those who wonder if it can handle 30K per day i can tell you i had 30K on my very own site and the script went no problem.

Yes it uses a flat text database, but it is updated only every 2 minutes, so it dont take too many recources.

Panther, it will be my pleasure if you can beta test the script and im sure you wont have to "go flat on your belly here".
