I think background color doesn't matter...
The content really matters and how the site looks and loads. I understand you, you like white and black, but this is business buddy, you should do what surfer likes, not you.....

Those designs/layouts I love have no success at all when I put them online......

Sad but true.... surfer needs minimmum design and good quality and fast loading content + it has to be carefuly cathegorized and prepared for easy surfing...

these are my thoughts

White, it looks more surfer friendly.

True, but the background must complement the rest of the page...

When i design galleries, i make sure the background, links, and text are all co-ordinated with the colour of the content.

Ron, the white looks better with the MS foler icons, but perhaps black looks better further down the page.

How about a bit of a Michel Jackson page? http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/wink.gif

You might be very surprised how different backgrounds and colours work different.

Playing around with background colors (even within a table) sometimes make about 10-15% clicks more or less....

Also marketing pros says there are colors to sell that and colors to sell something else.
Not sure, but I believe red sells sex. Anyone?

Anyway, if it comes to colors I dont like agressive colors. Discreet colors give it a nobel touch in my eyes.

Play around with it and keep the colors that work http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

As for galleries, I'd say black makes the thumbs look more brilliant, with deeper colours etc. But white is good too: Black text on white background makes it more ergonomic to read and the surfer can get the whole text in shorter time and with less physical effort. I tend to use white whenever I want a site to appear to be "honest" or trustworthy. While black could be better for the into the face style advertising.

Maybe you should not use pure white background... Use something close like #f0f0f0 ! You can put 1 pixel border around your thumbs so it will look pretty pro.

The other thing to consider about colors (and for that matter, the look of the whole gallery) is how well it meshes with the look of the tour you ultimately send them to (assuming you're looking to actually make money off of a signup and not just selling the click). The more their destination reinforces the experience that stimulated them to click, the better the odds are that they'll keep going to the signup page... In my limited experience, anyway.

So the challenge is to design a gallery that compliments the tour, stimulates a high clickthrough rating, and manages to get a good listing on the TGPs you send it to. Make all of that click, you'll be rich in a month :-)

For whatever it's worth, I start basing my background color on the tour (if it has primaries, I go with primaries; if it has pastels, I go with pastels, etc.), and modify it or compliment it with other colors in the gallery to make the thumbs and banners (if any; I use more text links than anything) look good.

Yeah, some even make their own tours I read on the forums. With Black on Blondes I often see galleries that come as one-page-tours and have the signup options incorporated. BoB's original homepage looks kinda ugly so that might be a good idea there. I wonder why they don't do a little bit design, but might be "never change a running system" or so.
