we were planning to license video for web use - we have a bunch we can't use - but i have NO clue what sizes, formats, etc, people prefer.
is there a market for ready-made gallery clips?
please let me know how you buy YOUR videos - and how long each clip should be.

Hey their,
i would sell your clips as mpg or avi format then if the webmaster wants they can change the format to real player-asf .ect
think the most common size is 320 x 240
just my 2 cents.. :D

how long should each clip run? 3-5 minutes? 5-7? 1-3 minutes? 15 seconds for gallery use? fuck it, 30 minutes and let the webmasters deal with it? *lol*
we have real or mpg, and they're whatever size they're shot in... we're not shrinking them.

Whoops i forgot to add that part- SIZE
FOR mpg about 1.5-2 megs is good.
most pay sites i see offer about 1.5 megs avg
then offer a long say 15 min real player version.
another words offer a bunch of smal;ler mpg clips then give them a long version Real version.
Hope that helps ya.. :D

basschick,
I run www.mogulteam.com (http://www.mogulteam.com) and would be very interested in discussing this issue with you, as I have a team of webmasters that use nothing but video
as far as format goes, mpeg or wmv, avi is okay, but we only use that for small clips (10 sec or so) as far as the length we get it in, 300 - 400 meg is fine with me, I just cut up to one minute clips then encode it to wmv
real format, well not sure what you would do with that, we never touch it
drop me an e-mail or ICQ if want to discusss what we can do to help each other

What about the DIVX codec is that not a more efficient codec for avi??
I have noticed a few videos using it but i didnt know if it was size or quality maybe somone could explain this also?

it might be more efficient with divx, but it'S NOT yet a standard...

the Divx codec, when used properly can give you a nice quality avi clip at a fraction of the normal size,
MogulNetworks includes among other things MyMoviePass, which is an all movie AVS. All sites must provide their content in either mpeg or wmv format as it does not require the surfer to have to get some codec in order to view the content
When out team uses avi it will be for 10 sec clips with no sound, but high quality video, these will range in size from 400k-550k
When I cut up movies for distribution to team members or for our mogulmovies or something along that lines, I make the clips 1 minute long, with sound and very high quality video in .wmv format, and those will be approx 2.6 meg per clip, and the surfer does not need to go find some codec to allow them to view it
