View Full Version : Auto-homepaging is a dirty trick - please don't use it!

I decided to use autohomepage for a day. I used a non-adult page as the homepage. I also included my email in the page to see the responses. I received a lot of emails, a few of them annoyed, but most of them asking me to 'please remove this file from my computer'. They had no clue their homepage ahd been changed. I replied to everyone apologising and asking them to change their homepage back. Many of them did not know how to do this! I prepared step-by-step instructions for changing homepage in IE5 and mailed it to them (by then having taken the script off).

One of them still can't change the homepage back, saying his homepage field in the internet options box has been greyed out. He's using Erol's internet, whatever that is. I assume some other homepager must have used a more sophisticated script to disable changing the homeage. Does anyone know a way around this? I really need to help this guy.

I won't be using this script ever again and I seriously implore you all to do the same. If you do use the script, do not change it to an adult page as you can get some of these newbie computer users in real bad trouble. It's not worth the few bucks it will earn you.

I agree, a lot of computer users dont know how to remove bookmarks, its incredible. Their good be children using that same machine. Its not worth it. If you want to autohomepage, do it to a NON ADULT SITE with your sponsor crap or whatever.. http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Tell the visitor to go to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Inte rnet Explorer\Control Panel

And remove the value named "HomePage" this will remove the disabling of changing the default homepage.

This setting can also be reseted using my little tool, mentioned in earlier posts.

MrNice,

Thanks! But how does one edit registry keys? I don't know that myself so I can't expect the newbie guy to know.

I found your utility but I dont think he would like to download and use it being suspicious of everything on the internet now.. I think I'll use it myself though - looks handy!

Hmm... not sure how I can explain any better than I did...

Do the following:
Go to start->run, enter "regedit" in the edit field.

The registry editor will appear, you will now see several main keys starting with HKEY_. Open the HKEY_CURRENT_USER one, and go to the key mentioned above, just like a directory on your harddrive.

When there, a value named "HomePage" will show on the right side. Simply delete this value, close the Internet Options dialog, re-open it and the setting should be enabled again.

Hope this is detailed enough http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks, that would be good enough for any newbie!
