Is P4 as much better as much more it cost?

I've had both and I like Athlon

my .02 :D

I don't agree with PeepNTom.
I have AthlonXP 1.8 (on Abit + 512MB KingMaxPC133) and P4 1.6 (on Assus P4B + 512MB KingMaxPC133)
Last three months my P4 non-stop working without crash (and I can sleep with open case :D

Second P4 and Athlon have almost same price (don't forget good cooler is ~$50~$75 Alpha)

P4 is average 30% faster in applications. In VirtualDub (from MPG to DivX 30%), in Photoshop almost 50%...

Athlon is still faster in games. There is no game which use new P4 set of commands So, now I use Athlon only for playing...

Lastly VIA issue new drivers every 2 weeks, bug on bug...

my €0.2

See everything I have read shows Athlon to be WAY faster!

I run the old Athlon 1.4 at home and the P4 1.4 @ work! Both have 512 Megs RAM but the Athlon renders video faster in Premiere and cleaner on my Athlon than the P4! I dont think the cost warrants the expense in this issue! Photoshop opens for me in about the same speed, and does EVERYTHING I need in about the same time using either processor....

That's about $.03 worth of info I thinK!

It's no contest, when you consider the difference in price, Athlon XP is way better than P4.

Facts are that the AMD is faster.
Of course, on an unstable system (bad motherboard, bad BIOS, ...), AMD can be way slower... but Intel can be as well.
Taking the price into consideration, go for the AMD. You won't ever complain.
One thing : make sure you have a massive cooler ;)

prices for xp have dropped lately. I got XP1900 for $185 and rebuilt one of my servers last week - haven't seen anything faster.

of course to take an advantage of all this speed you need good board, right kind of ddr ram, hack your kernel a bit, etc...

GSE, if you upgraded a pure webserver to an XP processor, it can't really get faster than a, let's say, 1Ghz. Webservers rely on fast and huge RAM, and less on the processor speed.

of course...
I changed the board and ram too, it had an old slot A K7 before. Also pc2100 ECC registered ram and some other things for extra cooling

i have an athlon xp 1900

LOL you are saying a P4 with SDRAM is better than a Athlon XP!

Even here in Portugal (where hardware costs and arm and a leg) a Athlon XP is much much cheaper than a P4, btw you can get a decent cooler at $25!

Your P4 is 50% than a Athlon XP at same speed in Photoshop lol, I would pay to see that!

What kind of via bugs you got?

Useless to say that P4 is a waste of money and slower (even if its at higher Mhz)!

Get yourself a nice Athlon XP dude :)

Let the ranting begin!

I really don't understood. Does anyone of you have P4?

Please start the fucking VirtulDub get *.MPG and recompress them to *.avi (DivX 4.12 stereo sound MPEG-Layer 3).
I get following results (on MPEG 2min)
On Win XP Corporate
Athlon 1.8 - 1min 5sec (I get same results on old Athlon 1.4 and 1GHz)
P4 1.6 - 44sec
On Win 98
Athlon 1.8 - 1min 6sec (I get same results on old Athlon 1.4 and 1GHz)
P4 1.6 - 51sec

Your P4 is 50% than a Athlon XP at same speed in Photoshop lol, I would pay to see that!
About Photoshop 6.01 start any demanding filter on Athlon and P4 and you will see difference (Anand and Sharky tested processors on Photoshop 6 without update for Intel P4).

My P4 is never crashed, and I mean NEVER. I don't hear cooler, and just like I say I can sleep with open case. :D

On software without support for P4 commands (on Win 98), Athlon is faster. Software on Win XP Corporate P4 with P4 commands P4 is much faster. Period.

And again, Please test them by self, trust no one!

Maybe you should upgrade you memory for your XP and redo the tests. pc133 ain't the best no more.. lol

I have a Athlon XP1800 with DDR-SDRAM PC2100 and it runs great, have no problems at all with it, great to games as well :-)

But I think it is just a question of faith, I used to have Pentium, but hearing that the P4 wasn't as good to games I decided to give the AMD a try and for the month I have had the computer, I haven't regretted.

Thanks guys for your opinions.
I think I should add some info on what I'm thinking about

Motherboard Intel 850GBC for P4
or
DFI VIA Chipset Socket A Motherboard for AMD

256MB RAMBUS Memory

MS Windows XP Professional

If you have any ideas about good motherboard
let me know. :)

Rui

Dude with so many other brands you choose DFI?

There are LOTS of other good motherboards!
also RAMBUS doesn't work with socket A motherboards so you would have to buy DDR (it would be stupidty if you bougth a SDR based mobo at this time)

Rui

As for recommend a mobo, do you plan in make overclocking?

For Intel P4 - Gigabyte P4 Titan DDR
I will by this board in next few days ;)

For Athlon - ABIT KR7A-RAID

The one thing with the AMD chips/mboards is that they overheat like a bitch in heat..
There is your crashing problems right there, I mean you will have to keep the case off and have a liquid nitrogen cooling system in there to prevent them from overheating..
Is the XP chip 64 bit?
Also if you are going with P4's you have to grab some PC800 Ram..
I have a P4 2ghz machine with 1 GB of PC800 and a P4 1.7 with 256 and this shit is well shit hot..(hehe, let myself introduce myself)
I remember when AMB and Cyrex first came out that was always the problem with them..They always overheated, and last I heard they still did...
If you want speed AND reliability go with intel...

intel versa amd, I suppose it becomes just a matter of taste. :)
amd is faster by most benchmarks and it's cheaper at same time. Crushing due to overheating? We never experienced this, but I did have lockups at fisrt on windows due to asus shitty board (that one with alimagic chipset). Recently they realized same 'win2k' amd bug actually exists in linux http://www.gentoo.org/
However overall and properly configured XP is pretty cool, so don't think I will ever need go back to pentium.
everyone mileage may vary :D

My personal oppinion is that AMD is better than INTEL.
About that motherboard u may wanna take a look at the new chipset from NVIDIA!
It rocks - but it's about $240 mainboard only .. :D that's the sad part..
I have a MSI K7N420 PRO - the chipset is ( i think ) nForce 420D
I never liked very much VIA chipsets but till now I had no choice - AMD won't make chipsets anymore - but this NVIDIA chipset is way better.

Take care !
