View Full Version : problem, a little off topic..
Im having a problem with my computer. When i boot it up it freezes on me. I have no idea what is wrong..i have only had it for about 3 months or so... I use windows 98.
im guessing this would be some sort of hardware problem..if anyone knows what could be wrong please post. Thank you in advance.

Assuming it's not a sotfware problem, it could a motherboard problem or a memory problem. What kind of memory you have on it? EDO, SIMM, etc. Try first to replace the memory.

Do those steps... go to the next step only if it didn'T solve the problem. when does it freez in the boot sequence? if you can't see shit look in your motherboard book about a jumper to clear BIOS... and clear it.
1. Delete the programs you have recently installed using add/remove sofware icon
2. Reinstall windows (backup your stuff)
3. Unplug any unusefull hardware (soundcard, secondary videocards, network cards, etc) only keep the essential.
4. try new memory chips (without replugging the removed hardware on previous step)
5. try new motherboard (without replugging the removed hardware on previous step)
6. pray
7. throw the comp by the window http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif
If you are not experienced and/or have a computer that you can'T touch to be guaranteed, bring it to the technicians where you bough it!

Check the cooler also. Most freezing problems appear due to the high temperature over the CPU. As suggested you can try also to install win 98. Good luck!
My pc was just doing the same thing a couple of weeks ago and it was caused by some programs I had in the startup process..... too many programs were starting up at the same time.... it may have nothing to do with your problem, but if you can get into your Windows at all and find out what is starting up and weed some of it out, it may help you.
I managed to start my system in safe mode and got alot of the startup things out and it fixed it. Not saying this will help you but it did me. I was about ready to clear everything out and a friend of mine told me to cleanup my startup menu and it worked for me.
Go to start, run and type in msconfig and then to startup..... see what all is running at startup and unclick what you don't need to startup your system.
It may or may not help you.
Good luck....

I think it's more likely to be a software problem.
1) start up in safe mode
2) run msconfig
3) turn options off one by one and reboot
Once you reboot without problems you know which file causes the problems and you can check/edit it so it won't cause you problems anymore
Wolfshade
ill give it a shot wolfshade, any other possible software or hardware problems??

Do you see your bios when you turn it on ?
do you see loading windows ???
If you don't then its a hardware problem -
Make sure your video card especially if it is agp is seated proeprly in its slot. Also make sure your memory chips are seated onto
the moboard.
I would suggest you get windows Me - they have a restore feature so that when problems like these arise, you restore and bam, you
are back in business. Also, my system with ME very rarely crashes....

That sounds VERY familiar to me....
However, I was able to start Win ME fine, but after 30-45 min the system started stuttering.
After deleting all shit from the startup process with msconfig the whole system runs stable again....

Hey Dan S, what's Windows ME like? I was looking at a tidy little PC package today that comes with ME pre-installed.

Hmm, I didnt notice major differences to Win 98, other than some color schemes are different.
Program Menu is a bit different.
But I am not a tech freak, maybe I just havent noticed the big differences?

Pyro, go to dos-mode and type scanreg/ restore.
Pick a boot up from a few days ago.
