hey peeps,

I was wondering how new hosting companies, hosting less than 100 domains could afford t3 and oc3 lines?

Because of 2 things:
- Number of domains don't says a thing (with our hosting the number of domains is just the virtual part, you don't see how much colocated and dedicateds there are)
- Most bandwidth providers (such as Level3 for example) charge us the 95th percentile method...

The really small hosts probably are resellers or just host you on their dedicated server on which they have some space left http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Alot of hosts, just have space in someone elses faciluty. They aren't actually doing their hosting themselves. Which you lose out more on support then anything else.

thanks, but what exactly is the 95th percantile method?

(weren't you the guy that wanted to know all about setting up hosting?)

95th percentile method = they take a sample of your traffic each couple of minutes. At the end of the month they've like 10.000 simples. they throw away the top 5%, and then calculate your bandwidth accordingly.

I would have to disagree. It makes no difference to a person who has a virtual account who owns the facility their web site is in. Almost all the hosts out there do not own the facilities they use but that does not mean that their customers get worse service or that "They aren't actually doing their hosting themselves." What difference does it make who owns the structure?

What is the point of paying high fees to backhaul a T3 if you can use an OC-192 in someone else's facility for the same price and provide the same if not better level of service?

Why would the customer lose out on support?

Matter fact I know one guy who actually runs from his house and ISP / Webhost and seems to be doing pretty well.

Its a larger startup cost to start but can save quite a bit in colo fees over the long term. It also saves trips to the data center.

toker, there is also a premium to get the same conditions in your house as in a colo, which i would say is impossible.
why?
because you will have to soundproof your walls to make sure you won't hear the HVAC units which cool the location. Dual Power units, power generators with a few days worth of fuel. contract with a hellicopter company to bring in the fuel in case it runs out. earthquake protection.
The list goes on http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

To have a professional webhosting company IN your house is foolish, as $$$tandaman says there'd be no way somebody would ever put all those APC power backups in his house (mainly because we're talking about HIGH voltage and he'd had to have special deal with power company fire company etc.)

Most probably the guy just has 1-2 servers on which he does some (dirtcheap) virtual hosting.

It is ok to be hosted on these things, as long as you understand that you always really do get what you pay for.

Who says he's got that all in his house? http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif Maybe he's riding such a nice bike when the power fails hehe

But oh well as long as he hosts personal sites and that stuff he won't need all these goodies and the garage will be a fine enough place to have these servers and DSL modems(?).
