i never worked with videos much - can you stream an mpg? if so, what software do you use?

thanks!

basschick, mpeg can not be streamed, it can be progressive though, which mimics streaming, much like qhat quicktime does when not on a quicktime server.

you download it, and as it downloads you are watching it....

If it sounds like a stream & looks like a stream... then it is a stream! Why buy the hype?

IMHO
use VirtualDub and produce asf files. Officially new version of VirtualDub doesn't support asf files (MS prohibition), but you can download unofficially versions (wich support asf), or you can use old version 1.33 (wich also support asf files).

I strongly advice you to don't install Windows Media Tools. Installing Media Tools will fuck up your MPEG4.x codec (incl. MP42 and MP43). You will have to re-install that codec and all DivX codec(s). If you ask me, this package sucks.

But, this is only my opinion.

peace

All mpegs are compressed file formats and the associated properties will not changed unless re-encoded. Sure, your browser will probably recognize the file as there are error checks written into MS media player, but it will not be a true wmv. Can all surfers play WMV files?
I changed my movie to Wmv format yesterday and already got about 10 emails of surfers which want to go back to old format (divX 3.11) and some of them can't play it (on win 95).

What do they need to do on older windows so they can play WMV ? (so I can make some tutor page for them)

Why not download the Stream Amywhere demo from www.sonicfoundry.com and then buy the full version if it's what you need? It can convert MPEG's to ASF and/or RM.

AVI and MPEG are high quality formats, but they produce larger files, unless you use something like DivX, and that opens up more support issues. You have to strike a balance between what the surfer wants and your bandwidth bill. For a movie post your audience might be a little different, but that's how I'd go for a members area.
