Hi,

A friend of my does some submission work..
He started his computer and it was very slow. Also shortcuts didn't work...Looked at his windows dir and program files dir. All files gone. He looked again and saw in his status bar. 52 files and 3 hidden files. He has checked the show hidden files. But still nothing to see. Anyone an idea what it is?

A few possibilities.

Someone else has access to the machine and deleted c:\windows
and c:\program files etc.

Back Orifice.

Runs PCAnywhere and left doors open on IP and network.

Opened email attachment suffixed .exe, .vbs, .bat, etc.

Did your friend look in Recycle Bin if it's still there on the desktop?
Either way doing any of the above means your friend has a bit to
learn about basic security issues. Not too many Worms and Viruses
delete. More times than not it's a human that deletes.

Also from the description you gave above I find it very odd your
friend "started his computer and it was very slow". With
an empty c:\windows dir its not possible to boot into Windows.
Poor explanation of problem, second partition carries Windows
dir, I dunno. In the end it sounds likely that your friend does
not run a virus checker or Firewall. Most V-checkers and Firewalls
alert to most of these devious kinds of access
