I've definitely used an LCD before, and definitely preferred it. I've also seen somewhere that LCD do infact put less strain on the eyes. It's lower-level brightness - there's excess light with CRT (you'll notice it when you have monitor on with lights off).

Cheers,
Matt

Are LCD monitors good enough to do graphics work with? Are they like laptop screens that look like cloth?

Don't buy one if you smoke. The smoke screws up lcd monitors. (at least, that's what my gf says, who just bought one and now won't let me smoke behind her comp anymore)

It's a lot better for your eyes though, and it also looks a lot better.

I am using only flats ... my desktop got 2 x 17" tfts connected to an ATI Raedon. And yes, I am smoking. Both screens run with 1280 x 1024. Use this one for graphic work (photoshop, dreamweaver) and for programming. No problems with smoking, just make sure you buy a screen without too many pixel errors :nono:
-> white bright pixels that do not turn into any color than white

Same with my notebook .. no probs, good colors, res. 1600x1200 on 16.1". I guess as long as you do not do and print stuff which need color proof you are fine with tft.

I use Sony 18" LCD monitor. It's much better not only for your eyes, but it gives you the idea how the things should look for real - real colors, shades and shit. 400:1 contrast - i never saw such a quality view of my designs before on 19" CRT.

LCD monitor does not use a lot of space on your desk, it uses way less power. Photos look like real photos on it

If you want to go with LCD, go for Sony or Samsung only. I tell you from my own experience

Sony gives 3 year warranty (it is up to 7 burned pixels and then they'll change the monitor for you if you got that in less than 3 years)

any more questions?

Hi

I like LCD displays because they are compact and space saving, they consume much less energy than CRT monitors. Also, CRT monitors are known to emit harmful radiation, whereas LCD monitors do not.

Cheers!

using a Sony 18" too. It's a dream. And you can't compare a LCD to a laptop screen. LCDs are far better. When working with gfx you'll love them.

i never boght a LCD as I cannot stand my laptops' screens. It looks just ugly , no brigt or almost nothing.

Staying with my old 100 pounds Sony 21" , is doing great :)

exitmoney, the LCD screens for desktops cannot be compared with laptop screens, I run 2 desktop LCD's and a laptop, and the desktops give a far better quality picture, they are actually brighter than most CRT screens, but do not cause eye strain or fatigue.
Being able to mount them on a 6" shelf leaves a lot more room for junk on my desk as well.

ausboy,

I always thought that there is the same technology in the laptop screens and the desktop lcd, that is why I always stay away from them in the past. but thanks for the headsup maybe I should get one of those LCD then.

Any preference with the size to buy or what brand ?

thanks

Different technology in the desktops I believe, I can view the desktops up to (guesstimate) 60 degrees off center, my laptop I need to be sitting square on to see anything.

I have 15" LCD monitors, that are equivalent in size to 17" CRT, they sit virtually infront of the keyboards, and are plenty large enough for my use.

One thing to remember is an LCD is fixed in it's number of pixels, so they really are designed to be viewed at their maximum resolution. I can use mine from 640x480 to 1024x768, but the optimum picture is at 1024x768.
