as this is one of the very few boards I regularly read I'll try it here first, sorry being offtopic:
Today I installed the new Detonator driver for my Riva TNT 2 and after the reboot windows didnt start..
well, I thought "no problem at all" and restored the registry (scanreg /restore) and put up my old driver but its still the same - black blank screen after the win98 logo :(
anybody got experience with that crap and can help me please?
thx in advance
Brian

you can try hitting F8 right after the 'starting windows' line (i think it's F8) and then choosing the step-by-step mode. hit Y on everything. whatever is last is probably the problem.

Or you could try going into safe mode and removing the driver totaly, then try a different driver, did you get the right one last time?

wow fast reply thx :)
I forgot to mention.. I tried to go into safety mode and "uninstall" the driver but there is no option to do it.
you can just "overwrite" the actual one with another I think and this is what causes the prob IMHO.
cant be the registry either (see above).
salsbury, couldnt find any unusual or new stuff in my startup files. thanks though

you can replace it with the basic svga driver.. i forget its name but there's one that is just generic. that might get you goin.

salsbury: good idea, nearly forgot about that one ;) k I installed it, lets see
[...]update:
still blank screen at startup. same story.
is there any way to completely "uninstall" the driver in safe mode?(..assuming I'd know the names of the single driver files perhaps?)

i think if you delete the driver from the system properties, it deletes it from the system, but only while in safe mode.
I would just reformat, but then again, I just love the speed of a clean install :D

I wont format, you have no clue how many MONTHS I spent on the system like it is now :D
turned out to be the monitor driver and not the wrong detonator one..
now I just need to get a valid driver for my monitor from '97. the windows standard ones obviously dont work ;)
well, at least I know what to face now.
Thanks for all your help (again).
This board really turns out to be useful - I'll stop now and sleep cause writing this and viewing the board at 640*480 and 16colors (svga driver didnt work as I didnt find the win98cd..) hurts my eyes only.
thx again!
