View Full Version : Smutserver and Kinghost problems - Non US Surfers (Especially Australians)

Hi all.. I need some feedback.
I hear alot of people praising Smutserver and Kinghost around here. In fact I hear alot of praise about them in general.
I've never fully understood why, and here's my reason.

I'm in Australia, and I've been reviewing and running my own TGP's for over a year.
In all that time, I CONSTANTLY have problems viewing galleries and images on Smutserver and Kinghost. Almost every time I load up a gallery, I see about 40% broken images.
If I try opening more than one image at a time, they ALWAYS only half load in before the connection is terminated. Thus I am left with half images.
Now, it's only recently that I've discovered that people in the US (and possibly other countries too) never seem to have these problems, and it's unusual what I'm seeing.

So my question is directed at any non US surfers, and especially those in Australia. Do any of you also see these problems almost constantly with these two hosts?

I should point out, that I rarely ever see any 404's or redirecting, so I'm not accusing these hosts of cheating anyone. But I'm tying to discover the source of the problems I AM seeing, either to inform the owners of issues they may be unaware of, or to weed out the problem at this end if it turns out that's where it's located.
If this problem is more widespread, then it needs to be addressed because it makes viewing content on these servers almost impossible from this location.

Any replies or help would be appreciated, and please state your location with them.

Thanks,
JJ.

On my dial-up connection at the house, I see shitloads of broken images on Smutserver, and they load real slow. But, on the cable modem at the office, the Smutserver hosted pages slam in very fast. Since my home dial up is slow as shit, I don't think that Smutserver freehost is the problem. I have had several reviewers tell me Smutserver loads in great for them, from all around the USA.

I have never been re-directed by Smutserver.
But I just wanted to point out that broken images/slow pages might not be a Nationality problem, but a local Internet connection problem.

Kinghost is new. So far, nothing to bitch about. I wish them the best of luck.

Well im in US on dialup but i get the same prob with smutserver but king host once in a blue moon.

I think its connection overload remember smutserver is one of the most used and they send alot of requests per sec. Kinghost is growing fast and may do it more in time but this is not something new ive seen this happening for months.

What i care most is the 404 dam if they only load half that would maybe annoy the surfer off and make him buy membership to see the images. Least if the surfer gets 2-3 images they can get a nice tease from it and i prefer to tease then to please.

At first i thought some of these guys were upload partial images which does happen sometimes very rare though. So the easy way is to delete temp files and refresh it should appear but if you were to do it on every image i wish you luck.

I think this may fustrate the surfer but least he does see content so they dont think your jerking them around.

If anyone uses Smutserver do you know if this helps your sponsor click rates by chance?

> might not be a Nationality problem, but a
> local Internet connection problem.

Steven, my ISP is generally pretty good. And the problem only appears for these two hosts (more smutserver than Kinghost).
But I'm not denying that it could be SOMETHING to do with my ISP and a problem with the particular routes that these hosts use.
I was beggining to think it was a local problem only, as I would have thought the big TGP's such as the Hun would have already banned Smutserver for these kind of problems, yet they happily list them every day.
That's part of the reason I wanted other peoples experiences too.

Toker, I like your idea about it pissing the surfer off enough to make them buy memberships. If that's the case, then Smutserver, you're brilliant! :Þ

The biggest motivation behind this post was my own frustrations at trying to review galleries on them every day. I don't WANT to punish the webmaster for the host problems, so I try reloading over and over again to get a good FULL sample of the webmasters work. So I end up wasting a whole load of time on every smutserver gallery I see (which is increasing every day).
Kinda a character flaw I guess :)

But no.. I'm not gonna start banning them.

I build galleries daily on my SmutServer account, and I've done the same observations (in Europe).
Dial-Up => frequently broken images
LAN or Cable Modem => ALL images load lightening fast.

It'd be interesting if some tech guy could digress on this and offer a plausible explanation :)

Freehost is bullshit.

You're right, we had a problem with that about 2 weeks ago. With apache you can set a timer on the connection (after x seconds, the connection is closed). The timeout was at 5 seconds on kinghost, but we didn't realize the problem because the operators are all on cable modem.

Now that we've been informed there was a problem, it has been changed to 30 secs. Which means if you take more than 30 secs to download a pic, you're automatically disconnected.

Ok, I admit it's not perfect. If you are downloading 5 images at the same time on your dialup, chances are you will take more than 30 secs to download them and end up with half-images.

However, we've got to draw the line somewhere between usability and performance. If we let them go for too long, we'll end up with slow servers and broken images (because a surfer that downloads very slowly still uses a connection that can't be given to somebody else).

This should only affect a very thin % of surfers though. Obviously if you get cut images after 5 seconds this is another problem, and we'll try to find out what's going on.

Most likely SmutServer got a very low timeout to serve the most surfers as possible.

So to conclude I think you should time how long it takes until you get disconnected. It's probably not an issue with your country but rather with your overall download speed.

Hope that helps!

Regards,
Dan

That does help Dan, thanks :)
Although I'm not sure if thumbs would be affected as much as they seem to be if that were the case, but it gives me something to work with :)

And XP.. Thank you for your valuable contribution.
And it really IS valuable. The people here now know to listen when you speak.
Good for you!
