What Operating System Do You Guys Use?

I have a dell, which came with windows ME.
I installed XP and have had nothing but problems...

I was told that my computer has hardware designed for windows Me and not XP.

So, i was going to reinstall windows ME but it sucks :(

Then someone suggested windows 2000.. and then i was told again that i probably dont have spacific types of hardware to run it.

What should i do?

I'm not really sure what sorts of problems you could run into with a Dell and XP -- from what I've seen, XP runs better on Dells than a lot of other machines. I have a friend that has a 3 year old Dell that runs XP remarkably well -- everything is much smoother. With that said...

What problems were you having with XP? Did you do a clean install or an upgrade? Did you have the service packs installed? Did you update the drivers from Microsoft's web site?

There isn't a lot of rare hardware in dells that would make XP not work well -- but there are firewire devices and other things that might cause problems.

Windows ME was designed for home/game use -- it was not designed for the way most people use their machines that are making a living with them.

Windows 2000 would be a decent choice -- but I think XP is probably a bit better. XP has better virtual memory management than 2000 by far and the interface is a little more intuitive.

But give us an idea of what sorts of problems you are having with XP -- perhaps it is something someone else has also run into.

I have been using XP since inception and have had NO trouble at all. I used to use 98 but it was crashing all the time. I can now count the # of crashes i've had with XP on my left hand. If Xp does go down the crash has been far less severe then when 98 used to go down!:)
However, I am haveing a problem with IE6 right now ; a bug/virus seems to be swapping images on viewed webpages making them look all out of whack

Thanks for the replys so far...

The main problem i am having is my sounds only works half the time. When i reboot, sometimes my sound will be all screetchy and I scratchy. I listen to alot of music on my pc, so this sucks.

I use santa cruz drivers and software, which i think has the newest divers.

This problem only started when i installed XP Proffesional Edition, i was running ME.

I also seem to crash my browser alot and all my IE closes... I hate that.

Those are mainly my only problems. I love XP and i would like to continue using it.

I will say that i had a pirated version of XP, i was thinking about installing XP home edittion which i just bought through dell.

I may just format and install XP Home tonight.

Also, my computer is just about a year old. 1.4k Chip, 256 PC 800 Ram, 40 gig hd and a 32 ati graphics gard.

Its a great computer, but its starting to piss me off now :(

Thanks for the help everyone

Honestly, if your buying a Dell, Compaq, IBM or other major brand name PC, your best bet is to use the OS that they gave you with the machine. They often tweak the OS for maximum performance on their hardware. Of course any OS will work, but the tweaks are usually designed to work best for the OS you got when you purchased it.

Thats what a computer Tech told me where i work. He told me just to format and install the os that my system came with...

But i really like XP...

I think you just need to find the correct drivers and you'll be fine. Go to the hardware manufacturer's site snd see if they have the drivers for your hardware and OS combo.

Sound and XP/2000 :)

Boy oh boy did I fight this issue with my wife's machine.

when the machine starts up, make sure you have nothing sharing IRQs -- I had added a network card to my wife's machine and found out that on the motherboard she had, pci slots 1 & 5 shared the same IRQ -- and PCI slot 2 shared IRQ with the Video.

moving the cards around fixed the sound problems.

Might want to give that a shot before reformatting. Also, make sure that you have the bios set to PNP OS -- it probably is already set from the factory, but check it to make sure.

I switched to win2000 a couple of months ago, before that i used win98 which where great for games but very unstable when browsing alot and being online more than 24 hours.

Win2000 has been very stable, haven't seen it crash yet and it's more or less never offline.

Thanks Chirs....
My sound worked fine until i installed XP. WHen i bought the computer, i only added another hard drive... No sound card, video card, network card... they already came installed.

Bios to PNP? Thats that mean? I know some INFO about Bios, but i am not sure what PNP OS means.

I will surly try that(when i know what it is)
But i dont think i have a problem with conflicting hardware, only because i didnt have any problems before i upgraded.

In a way, i dont mind formating only because i have so much shit, it might be nice too start clean and fats again....

Although i hate the hours of work it creates..

I need to back up on cds a bunch of shit, then install all my software again, it sucks as i am sure u know.

I hardly ever turn off or even reboot my machine, so windoes 2k might be good for me in that sence.

But i do play alot of games... Will there be a major affect on that if i run Win 2k

I'm telling you -- my wife's machine worked fine on win98 -- even ran fine on win2000 for a month and then sound started to crap out.

I think Windows2000 handles cascaded interrupts differently than Windows98/ME which makes W2k and WXP a little picker.

Give it a try -- just move the cards around so that the first bios screen that lists interrupts doesn't have anything sharing interrupts.

In Bios, there is usually an option that asks if a PNP bios is installed. It should be set to yes, which will also resolve conflicts.

Also, in device manager, make sure there are no listed conflicts...

Windows 2000 is most stable system i`ve ever had (in windows family of course). I suggest you to use win2k second service pack or win98 revision two if you don`t want to have problems with system all days.

I run XP and I love it. The only problem is to don't use old programs. there are sometimes not compatible.

windows ME realy sucks. when MS released it, they immedeatly began with windows wishler, wich was renamed to XP. I've been working with netwoks and sometime with ME PC's. they sometimes just waren't able to make any networkconnection, also when I reinstalled the tcp/ip and nic(networkcard). The only thing that worked was to reinstall it.

I'll advise u to install XP or 2000. they are almost the same, only 2000 runs on slower machines. XP has some more options, but they are not important.

Good luck! if you have any questions, just mail me or put a post on the board.

Go into the device manager and delete the sound card -- let XP redetect the card.

I use Windows XP Pro. Excellent OS :)

I have used it on my old PC (P3 450 128MB PC100 RAM 20GB 7200RPM IDE) since the day it came out. It sometimes runs slow but it is very reliable.

Now I have it on the PC I built last week (SCSI -- need I say more?) and it boots in about 20 seconds -- hasn't crashed yet.

I run XP, but I have noticed (and wouldn't mind hearing other comments on it) that since I have been installing all the little windows updates that MS has released over the course of the last 6 months, I have noticed my machine getting slower and slower.

Maybe my machine needs another rebuild. I used to run Win2K but it turned into a real dog and I have a 1.4gz, 512mb ram machine, but it felt like it was really struggling.

I havent tried that yet and i am at work now so that wont be possible until i get home.. but i think i have tried that in the past.

If i do format and install win 2k... do u think my sound will work? Would my sound card be compadiable with the software?

I hope so....

Windows 98SE and it's quite stable. Most problems people have with Win98 seem to be related to poorly written 3rd party drivers.

This thread surprises me... I would have figured more of you would be running a Linux or BSD flavor. Personally I'm running Win98SE on this computer, FreeBSD 4.4 on one testbed server Red Hat on the other, an OpenBSD CD-booted firewall, and about 5 computers sitting behind my desk that I really should do something with. I've got my XP cd sitting around, but all this DRM crap MS is starting to release is keeping me from installing it.
