Here's another dumb question from an almost-newbie. It seems that most of you get paid by dollar cheques at regular (or not so regular!) intervals. So have I got to open a dollar account, or can I get paid by PayPal or Western Union or similar.
Banks in England seem to charge around $15 to cash a dollar cheque, although I have got a much cheaper way of doing it through a friend that trades on Ebay.

That's a problem most of us non-US webmasters have to deal with. If you can get paid by paypal it's good but not every sponsor does that, western union is pretty expensive though.
Ask your sponsor to set your minimum payout amount to $150-$200 (dunno how much money you make) before they send you a check, so you don't end up with a $30 check and have to pay $15 bankfees for it :)

You can open a dollar account and ask your sponsor to wire it
as well, but some sponsors charge a lot for that :( But it is a lot
safer then checks though...

My Ebay friend uses auctionpix and I might try them. They might be a bit funny about taking payment from sex sites though.

wire is much more expensive for both sponsors and webmasters. cashing a $ cheque should not be more than 3$ per cheque
take the checks, pay the 15$
and make min payout at every sponsor, f.e. min 100 USD so it´s doesn´t hurt you that much.
here my fee for checks is about 10 $, I really thinking of opening a own bank LOL

Might be worth approaching auctionpix
http://www.auctionpix.co.uk/
They convert US$, GB£ and Euros. It's a guy and his wife with 3 offshore bank accounts. Takes about a week to get your money, but they're cheap. They also have a good name on Ebay UK.

Make sure you make loads of money so that $15 bank fee is a tiny % :-)

You mean I don't do it for love!
Isn't there any love in this business?

Find someone who'll pay you in Sterling. It's not that hard - we do it all the time *and* pay our US customers in dollars **AND** our European brethren in Euros. Or open a dollar account..

My bank charges 35€ for a check and 35€ for a wire. Gee that's fun. Paypal is nice though, but I don't use many sponsors that provide payments via paypal.
Go to Lloyds TSB to cash dollar cheques, they charge £8 i think for as many as you want so just save them up.

I'll never bank with Lloyds - they are thieves. Cost me around £30,000 in legal fees and lost me over £350,000 through a breach of agreement. They move money from your account, double charge, and over charge on fees. Check your costs before you recommend them!!
"Cost me around £30,000 in legal fees and lost me over £350,000"
so what are you worrying about a $15 charge for then if your such a big timer, ask your fleet of accountants?
"Check your costs before you recommend them!!"
I've never had a problem with them, but then i allways check my costs!!

Cos I'm not a "big timer" now thanks to them. If you read the papers you will see all the scams that they have been accused of and the investigations into them (remember they own C&G as well)
What do you think that balck horse is doing rearing up - it's crapping on their customers.
Anyway this is a nice polite board with no swearing and no vitriolic comments! And it's Lloyds bank that have pissed me off, not the guys here who have been really helpful, so I don't expect they want to hear me bitching.
As a really serious comment - you should look into Lloyds bank if you run a business they really are the most deceitful of the British banks. I've just persuaded a large account to move away from them after they looked into their charges.
