I have found a very good deal on a dedicated server. Here is the specs:
Intel Pentium III Dual 800mhz
256MB Ram
Windows 2000 Advanced Server
40GB SCSI HD
Would a server like this be able to handle about 600GB of transfer monthly?
Thanks
Depends on what you are going to use it for.
I would never ask a server to transfer 600 GB / month without 1 GB RAM. But then again I also run script sites.
and I would NEVER EVER EVER EVER use Win2K use Linux or Unix :)

The server it self should handle 600gb with out a problem. Depeneding on how manny scripts you run on it, you might run into some issues with the ram. And lastly the fact that its a win2k box isn't that great. You should definately go with either linux or Unix. A linux/Unix box will handle more traffic and faster loads besides the server specs.

I bet YES. Crucial point is RAM. When you use heavy scripting, especially any database, I would upgrade it. Memory is cheaper than porn membership these days.

Thanks for your advice everybody. I'm only going to use it for TGP galleries so no scripts. I'll talk to the host about your advices.

What system of these should I go for:
RedHat Linux/Apache
FreeBSD 4.2 with Oracle 8.1.7
MySQL and all components
redhat
just make sure you tell you tech to install apache properly to allow more connections than it's default. It caught me by surprise recently. Oh yes, and make sure you empty your logs often if you do tgp, lol

cable53,
The server configuration you mentioned can easily do 600GB monthly it can easily do well over 6,000 GB monthly if configured the right way I am not sure why you would want to run Windows2000 Server I would preffer going with Free BSD or any other form of unix.

more ram, definitely. i'd go with freebsd personally. why oracle, though? i know of a freebsd server that is doing 250GB/day+ of gallery traffic and it's a single proc box.

256 MB RAM ? NO CHANCE! GET A GIG unless you are going to host one HTML page on that server. If you are going to run any CGI, PHP, there is no chance that server will handle 600 GIGS with 256 RAM

salsbury is freeBSD with oracle very bad or what do you mean?
I'm getting 512MB of ram instead of 256MB, now I just hope it's enough.

i haven't used oracle on freebsd, i don't think it's available natively. you could probably run the linux version on freebsd though.
anyways, i meant, why oracle on a server that'll only be used for galleries? it's best to make galleries static pages so the server doesn't have to think much to send 'em - i may be misunderstanding something though.
