Hi,

I know someone who wants to take a server.
He gets this server:

10 domains IP
- Sun Microsystems Sparc 10 Server 128 mb ram
- High Speed SCSI 2 gig drive
- Solaris 2.5.1
- Apache HTTPD installed

How much K can this server handle? He will do most tgp gallerie posting...

Not too much. Just because it's a SUN machine doesn't mean you don't need any memory.

I'd say after 2megs it will slow down quite a lot, so perhaps about 50-60k per day.

Kinda like the Cobalt RAQ I had. It took a dump at about 50k

Andre I use that server for galleries and just got listed by the Hun.
Did over 200k and no problems. Sure it's slow sometimes but it's cheap.

dude, have him get another 128 mg of ram, so he has 256. he'll be glad he did!

You neeeeed more ram... to 1 gig is great, but please dont go below 512, you get the money back 500 times in great preformance.
With 512 megs of ram, you should de able to handle your 50k og tgp, but if you add a good diskset and maby use Nt2000 instead, you can handle 200+k as i do.
If you lived in denmark, i would be happy to help you.

LOL

sure, Win2k is better than Solaris.. Sure Win2k on a Sparc server.. OMG where are we going?

But I agree with Coke you need more RAM

Anybody else can offer this kind of server for just 400 bucks a month with unlimited bandwidth?

The whole reason they would offer that server with unlimited bw for $400/month is they know it can't do much bandwidth :)

With apache anyhow :)

put thttpd on and you will get 15mbps out of that machine easy and i am not bullshitting i run a host and we have been testing
thttp and we sent 15mbps worth of tgp traffic to this machine running apache and it died at 7mbps with thttpd it was doing 14-15mbps and still had room to move althought the hard drive would have slowed around 20mbps

but yeah the above machine is a steal if they allow you to remove apache and put thttpd on :))

No, but we're going to introduce a great new deal soon :) which will be perfect for high traffic sites like TGP galleries.
Check out the announcement board later today :)

thttpd is a great server for galleries but it's not suitable for regular websites that need CGI scripts or anything of that sort. For pure traffic it is really amazing though. Still, with 128MB thttpd won't help you either :)

Ram is Low, but if you configure Apache "Act as Proxy server", you can handle very high traffic!
You can do it with Webmin (I think)

My personal computer is 100 times faster man ... buy something good not that crap . you will crash and loose yoru traffic ... Add ram to at least 1 gig or 2 . it's not that expensive but don't buy the cheapest one you will crash .

hmm that's pretty interesting. I read some reviews that tiny/turbo/throttling is much more stable on extreme load than apache, it doesn't eat that much ram and it more secure. I never actually tried it. Can you tell more about the results of your test?

Well you can take a look here: http://www.acme.com/software/thttpd/benchmarks.html

Problem is the whole model of Apache is bad in itself (pre-forking) for serving static pages. Web servers like thttpd are faster for serving static webpages because of their "one process" model, but if you're doing a lot of CGI they're slower than Apache.

A gain of speed is also won because thttpd supports less features than apache. I.e. no rewrite rules, no htaccess, no php (well thttpd has some php support but it's bad and should be forgotten for any php-intensive site) and so on.

But anyway if you know your things, you can tune apache to run as fast as httpd (with a lot more functions).

Apache 2.0 will also be a lot faster, due to a new model they are introducing.

Hope that helps,
Dan
