Hi, has anybody here clue about scsi drives? One of my IBM ultrastars doesn't work anymore. When the controller is checking the bus it detects it's name but spits out a message 'request failed'. What to do? There's some important data on it

no, all was running smooth for 9 month now. I've checked cables and even tried a second controller... maybe some hammer treatment will work?

I never had any scsi harddrive problems in fact all my scsi drives are still working.. the oldest is from 1989.
But i see that it's an IBM drive. Their IDE drives are dieing like flies nowdays. But don't think there is the same fault on scsi drives.
Anyhow it could just been a bad drive.. Such happens and you get a new on your warranty.

You need to work out a few things about the drive.
Has it got termination on it
Is it the end of the cable
Does it still fail if you slow down the transfer
Is the controller working with other drives
Have you got another SCSI device with the same id
stuff like that
Try putting another drive with termination after it on the cable
Try a different controller
Try it in a different machine
Whatever you do, make sure that the is somewhere to copy the important files if you do get it started. If the drive is failing you may only get one chance to get it off, so be prepared.

lol, I can't backup stuff cause I can't access the drive.
There are 4 drives of the same type in the machine. It's U160 so the cable has a terminator. All other drives are still working just this one fails. It have tested it on a second controller with another cable. I've plugged it to the last terminated connector. So it should work... but it doesn't. Cause it's the only drive on that controller the ID is OK too... suggestions?

With my name I ought to be able to give you better advice!! But if you've swopped cable, controllers and computers and the drive has been working and isn't then you might be in trouble. As a last resort you might try dropping back from u160 and try it with a lvd controller.
I suggested being ready to backup in case you did get it going. I've seen people manage to get a drive flying for the last time and not be ready to copy files.
