How can you tell if a recently deleted domain is a good buy? I often check out deleted domains and then if I find one I like I will look it up on Alexa.com to see what the Average Traffic Rank is etc. I have found some that the Average Traffic Rank is over 3 million. Would that be a good domain to buy or doesn't that really mean anything when you're buying a deleted domain? Thanks for any suggestions :)

Well I'm not very impressed with alexa.
Most of my sites they've got no info on. horny-bitch.com they reckon has been going since 1999, but I registered it in October 2001, and they've got the wrong owner for it.

Oh really? Is there anything else out there that is like Alexa that gives you information on sites? If anyone knows of any could you please post em? Thanks :)

I think alexa is pretty good to use if you want to know some ranking info.

OK so they've got horny-bitch ranked at 524,711 which is probably because I'm not doing enough work if it is the right ranking. They've got the contact as Home Digital Studio in Southern Pines and I've never heard of them.

I looked up sex.com and saw that people that visited this site also visited

Test Page For The Apache Web Server On Red Hat Linux

What conclusion can we draw from that!

It's probably a former owner. From what I can work out, they captured the WHOIS information the first time they indexed a site, and didn't check for subsequent changes. I don't think they collect the information automatically any more, but the past data is still there.

Their system gets a bit confused sometimes, I went a couple of pages deep into the section that shows links to my site, and it suggested that people who visit my site may be interested in buying toy walkie talkies. It's a webcam site. :) (!?)

Cheers.

Alexa can be useful, but dont get carried away with it as the results can be way off, but try to get sites under 1million. A better indication is the link popularity checker that someone already mentioned, eg http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/

Other tools for ascertaining whether it is worthwhile are the overture suggestion tool http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

the web archive at http://www.archive.org will tell you what was there previously (if anything).

Also check to see if the other tlds are taken, ie if you see a .com you like and the .net or .org are registered then theoretically it could be slightly better.

Thanks for those links Stouch.

Looks as if horny-bitch was registered before me and left to die.

I looked at the SE links and got the attached table. Interestingly, the only SE that I submitted to was Google, and I did this through some submission site that I have forgotten. I think I'll add a page to my adult surfers advice site suggesting that google is not the best SE to use as they are obviously a bit slow on the new sites.

Sorry about the link, it seems to have fallen foul of the anti-hotlink checks in Revshare.

Here it is again http://www.computerthreats.com/hbstats.jpg

but it's probably lost it's relevance now.

I assume that the 382,389 is not aimed at me, as I was 524,711 earlier in this thread. Or has this posting moved me forward 140,000 places.

Alexa is seemingly easy to manipulate though. For instance I suspect that Joshua's pornoclause.com gets a lot more traffic than one of my sites which is ranked just over 14,000.

Anomalies like this are why you need to be careful with Alexa.

I myself check manually and try to guess from what info I gathered.
Also short names do better I think.
And if is listed in Yahoo in payed directory much better.
