Okay guys,
i'm preparing somekind of forum for special services, but i want to keep that forum low on ressources, poster friendly (not too much though) and, most important, very fast.
Now, i could take vBulletin like used on awi.
But i need just the very basic things like : posting and reply, moderator capabilities. No real need for smilies nore graphics.
Just a very simple and fast script which handles things on a very simple way.
What are your recommendations? Be it cgi or php.
It should be free.
Thanks, Michael
PS : A good search function in it is a MUST.
I perfer YaBB http://www.yabb.info
Has quite a few hacks for it and its pretty clean cut and oh...its free =)

YaBB has and can be broken into but they may have fixed it. and you can always remove the smileys and fancy shit so it is bandwidth friendly
if YaBB has fixed their problems then it would be a good one, easy to install, easy to use, free, no advertisements or banners on it

PHPBB has everything you need and is almost completely text-only.

I've tried a lot of board scripts. once I had tons of posts and replys in the db. The scripts could'nt handle it. Not a lot of scripts are supported as much anymore. Another problem I had was when I got the script..... I was happy. But when I wanted and needed another feature. It could'nt happen because I had customized it too much or never had updates. Believe me.... you'll want more features. The only bulletin boards I know that can handle this and are supported 100% are http://www.vbulletin.com and ubb. And even ubb has been heard to crash. just my $0.02

Thanks guys for the replies so far!
I'm checking out invisionboard, but it seems to still be quite heavy as well. So far i've been checking out a lot of scripts from the net etc... but i still need good recommendations about VERY simple scripts.
Those of you dealing with Choker, you know he's got a board too. This is exactly the type of board i'm looking for. Very simple, fast, not heavy on ressources, search engine in it, text based.
I'm gonna to contact him, since i don't know if it's an exclusive product of one of his programmers, but if there's somewhere something very similar to this one, pls let me know!
Thanks, Michael

Hi Michael,
When you say "heavy" do you mean slow for users, or heavy on the servers?
I've found it to be quite fast for users, and we have many clients using it on our servers (I always recommend it), and its not hard on the servers.

Hi Ditlev,
i guess i mean heavy in both senses , for users and servers.
What i mean is, such feature like here on this board, about 70% won't be used by myself and barely be used by other users, such as the choice of using several fonts (a la winworD), attaching files, smilies etc etc etc...
That's why i prefer a very simple forum script without all the candies. Just the ability to post and search for informations should be more than sufficient.
Thanks, Michael
