i think it's linux.
what do you have for me?
my host does not have such a script...
You really wouldn't want to run a bandwidth limiting 'script' (It's more a full application) on a single dedicated server. Such scripts exist but they are mainly thought to be used on a dedicated bandwidth limiting machine since it uses quite a lot of resources, especially if you plan to push several megabit/sec through it.

I don't see what's the point... more bandwith= growth = more money..
if not, it's time to change the design or something...

Maybe he dosnt want someone mass posting to tgp's costing him $$$$..

then yoiu can limit access with the use of htaccess... by adding the domains from which it should be linked..
just that limitting bandwith will result in slow connection, pages needing to be reloaded in order to see all thumbs (which will get you unlisted at linksites/tgps) plus limit growth..
just my view on this... http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

you don't understand.
i want to host other people, not my own sites... but i want to limit their bandwidth, so that they're not able to uplaod videos or something else...
just for controlling them!
what would be the best for that?

or if you host a free daily video or something it would be very useful to limmit the # of downloads so its basicly first come first serve http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

that would be good, too!
how can you limit the number of downloads??
If you install webmin I think you can limit the bandwidth on your domains in that. Not sure but I think so.
But if you charge people for per GB transfered why limit it?

i don't want to charge them...i want to give them up to 4 or 5 gigs per day for a popup...that is better for me...could you give me the url of the program???
No, webmin does not support that. Webmin is only a Remote Administration tool ... nothing more http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif
Look for this programme on search engines. I'm sure you'll find something but as I already said I think it's not a good idea to use it on a single machine.
If you think that a script can limit bandwidth, you are very confused. By the time you realize that someone bypassed the script, you will be stuck with multi-thousand dollar bill.
It *has* to be done using traffic shaping software in the kernel or at the router/switch outside and not the box.

hmm...but there must be a software where i can limit file sizes right? anyone knows that?
i have a crapped amount of bandwidth per day..so the user would only do that one day. when i see that he's making bad things, i will delete him http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif
Yes, it is possible to limit the sizes of the files that are being requested. What you will need to do, though, is send all the requests towards that script. That can only be achived by using rewriting every single hit to point to the script. That can be done on the server level. If you cannot do it on the server level (server being your webserver), you are guaranteed not to be able to intercept all the hits.
I have written a few scripts that massages the requests and could be easily adopted to checking for file sizes. It does heavily rely on the database backend that stores the rules.
Assuming that you did manage to send all the hits towards the script, the script would need to be able to parse all possible types of requests and correctly process them. That is pretty much equivalent to writing entire http server. It is really not worth the efforts, since it will become cat and a mouse game. SOmeone will discover a hole, use it, you will find it and close it, a new hole will be discovered, and everything would repeat once again. Meanwhile you will get a really nasty bill from your provider.
Finally, remember, 95th percentile means you have two days of "free" bandwidth. The moment you pass that, every single peak will count against you.
What you probably want, on the other hand, is a server that is capped with a certain amount of bandwidth that it can push. In that case no matter what happens, you will not get stuck with an insane bill.
Drop me a note, I may be able to give you a hand - alex@girlnest.com.

What about limits on the size of the upload directory....
Give them only X number of megs.... My old ISP did that one to me... That will teach me to use a shared server...
