Dear Colleagues, :)
I really need your input on this.
I am trying to embed RM movie into my site's home page but I have few questions
1.How can I convert to RM files from AVI/MPEG/MOV?
2.Is there any editors (CUT/JOIN) for RM files?
3.Is Real Media popular format for video?
4.How can I protect RM files from hotlinking?
Thank you all in advance,

Hi, i will try to help you out as much as i can....
1.How can I convert to RM files from AVI/MPEG/MOV?
Go to download.com do a search for video converters...
here is a link to 1 i foundhttp://download.com.com/3000-2167-10143023.html?tag=lst-0-1
2.Is there any editors (CUT/JOIN) for RM files?
Go to google.com do a search for video editors...
3.Is Real Media popular format for video?
Not as popular as .avi and .mpeg
4.How can I protect RM files from hotlinking?
You can do this by adding this line to your htaccess file
RewriteRule .*\.(gif|GIF|mpeg|MPEG|jpg|JPG|rm|RM)$ - [F] http://popuphell.com

Not as popular as .avi and .mpeg
Is .avi that popular? The format rarely works for me. I'd much rather
come accross a RAM anyday :) - but mpeg is my favourite :)
Cheers

Yes. MPG is my favorite also.:p
And Yes. AVI never worked for me either.
However, some people love it more than MPG because of its
smaller size with almost same quality.
I guess its a mistake to compare RM and MPG because
there are 2 different types of media:
RM,QT,WM --> streaming
MPG,AVI --> prerecorded

I wouldn't even consider using realMedia. They used to be a pretty large codec that alot of people used, but now you pretty much have to buy their annoying, system-configurating software to watch RM streams. I think there is still a way to get the player for free (legally) but they make it a pain in the ass to find it on their site.

I'd always prefer mpeg, but also wmv or avi over real player files...
their software is a huge fucking spyware which killed my windows configuration a few times.
have a look at wmv, you can achieve really small filesizes at the same quality as mpeg.

I agree with that.
Even if you have newest version of their player.

I've used it for a while to stream movies...
to convert to rm you can use real producer... to stream you'd need their streaming server.. it's ~$1k, however there's a free one (as said before it's a pain in the ass to find it on their site) but it's limited to 20 connections. If you don't want to stream it's better not to use the real format. But if you stream the .htaccess mentioned above doesn't work anymore (eg having the content in a pwd protected dirdoesn't help. If somebody has the link to your streaming server he can leech the movies). I stopped using it so I haven't looked for a protection.

Thanks stramm,
What about Flash? I can do some Flash but I never inserted movie there. Is it worth of trying?
Does anyone know about videos in Flash?
TIA,

Thanks a lot people,
when you told me about htaccess will it apply to all video files:
MOV, AVI, MPEG, RM, WMV as well?
TIA
