i am trying to change mpg's into something that will stream - either real or wmv. i would settle for turning them into .avi's 'cause i DO know how to convert them to wmv's. so far, i have found XING MPEG ENCODER at real networks. it *seems* to convert mpg's to other file types. is the quality of the movies it converts reasonable or is there another program that makes better quality files?

Hi Basschic,
never used th xing encoder, I just open the mpg
in VirtualDub www.virtualdub.org
and save it as an avi, then use the Win Media encoder to encode for streaming.

go here:
http://www.jopor.de/dvd2divx/html/download.html

scroll down to the bottom of the page (to where it says Nachbearbeitung) and download the 1.3c version (the first one). That's the best version imho.

Dammy, downloaded it, thanks.

so far, every mpg i've tried to open in it had a problem - it won't open mpeg4's and with the rest, it says "MPEG Import Filter: unexpected end of file"

*sigh*

i hate learning video!

If you're getting the "MPEG Import Filter: unexpected end of file", then there's something wrong with your MPGs...
Oh.. And the program should have the built-in filters.Hit me up on ICQ if there's really no filters in the program and I'll send you my version. (the number's in my profile). It's true there's no actual help, but the proggie is pretty easy to use.

basschick,
You don't need filters to convert mpg's to avi with VirtualDub...
Also, every version of VirtualDub will convert mpg to avi, only newer versions doesn't have support for *.asf (though you can download "cracked" versions of VirtualDub with asf boost).
However, if you need some help for VirtualDub, feel free to hit me on ICQ (see # in my profile).

peace

Exactly.. The filters in VirtualDub aren't import filters, they're used to edit the movies (resizing, adjusting contrast, brigthness, etc)

try flix at wildform.com , or use sorenson codecs, they're the best for streaming video compression/quality

Hi bass, i would suggest you ASF.

Converting with virtualdub should be always possible- as long as you've the correct codecs. Depending on your windows and mediaplayer version you should already have asf codec.

You can get divx (mpeg4) codec here: www.divx.com

That should enable Xing as well btw.

I just asked a friend of mine what the best way is to convert stuff to ASF (that's the smallest format there- that's what you want). Will let you know as soon as he answers.
