im behind a network and i want to look at hosting a site... im not quite ready to get into the adult business :P but im behind a network, so its proving to be quite a problem
1) im behind a network. the method of sharing the internet [cable modem] is a dsl router, a d-link 704p
2) i can go 192.168.0.1 and find the information 'site' where i can log in and change stuff, but i dont know what to change, and if anybody is online tmz [in australia its 12pm and im going to bed soon] on msn / icq / irc and can help me actively, please dont hesitate to respond here... or contact me on the following
msn : thomasopdam@mbox.com.au
irc : whatever. i dun care :P
icq : 55724439

Setup a route in your router so incoming hits on port :80 on the routers ip go to your internal ip
Usually very easy to setup

log into your route and make a so called "nat"
you have to this so all traffic coming in of a specific port will be redirected to your computer

Just do IP forwarding - it should be in your manual - forward all requests for port 80 to whatever ip address in your internal network.

tobad, that is exactly my problem as well
go to http://theipfortherouter
for me its 192.168.0.1 i assume its for you as well
log in, probably using 'admin'
go to advanced in the quicklinks down the bottom [the only links, actually]
in the first free id spot, type a port that isnt blocked by your isp, then type YOU lan ip, then click on 'enable'
then make sure u have a index.html and go to http://whatismyip.com
that will tell you your ip
then go to http://yourip:yourport/index.html
my contact info is at the first post in this thread, if u want/need me to test it out for u. im very interested in if it works... thx

abovethelaw, thanks it works!
:bounce:
I only need to type the IP # so I don't need to ad the port #.
Cool.
Now, how can I turn my IP in to a domain name?

ToBad, i would really appreciate it if you could contact me on icq/msn [see first post in thread]
whats your ip, i wanna see :P
and you can get a cheap [15 AUS bucks per year for a domain name - i.e u have the host, and whenever ppl go to www.name.com it gets redirected to ur ip] domain name easily
thx

abovethelaw, if you are planning on hosting a porn site on your server in your house on Australian soil think again.
You can't legally host porn here, simple as that.

i'm not, but this is the most active [in other words, best] online community that im 'a part' of, and i figured some ppl might have tried to host a porn site off their computers [where its legal] before, so they might be able to help me if it worked for them

Nor will you be able to push very much traffic on a DSL connection legal or not.
Once you have traffic coming in your connection will slow to a crawl and thats only the beginning of your problems. You risk the possibility that your system is not secure/patched properly and getting hacked because your on winblows.
I think once you realize what is required to actually maintain a server of this type it will be more trouble then its worth for you. Otherwise dont you think every adult webmaster would have their sites hosted this way....

I was just giving you a friendly FYI on the legality of hosting porn.
You'd probably face stiffer penalties for that than robbing a service station.
