Sorry for all the questions, but I'm just trying to get to know all of you better. I've been out of school for 2 years now, just going back now. Anyone else here go to school. I'm just going to a tech school for now, I would go to a regular college, but I don't think I can apply right now. Although I'll just be taking some computer classes, so I can sharpen up my webmaster skillz

Very interesting for me to know as well =)

Do any of you webmasters go to school while doing this job part time and still making good money at it?

I'm usually online all day, but only work 2-3 hours, so I think if I spend less time surfing the net doing nothing, and more time learning, I'll be a better webmaster.

Of course, many work a lot more than I do...

School of hard knocks... I went to one year of college and hated it. Loved the partying, loved networking and meeting new people and of course the chicks but that was it. I have always preferred to teach myself skills and knowledge. Much of what I know in life comes from experiences with friends and the street. Also, because I grew up in family businesses I have been used to working and making money so being in college and listening to professors pretend that they know everything was a complete drag. Granted this is just me. I also know that the value and importnace of education is very important to some people and I completely respect that.

Whatever floats your boat and keeps you happy. For me freedom and making a lot of money are priorities in life...

LD

LD where did you go??? I'm only going cause I have a daughter to support, and if things fuck up in this biz, I'm broke...

Anyways, tech school will suck... Should've applied to a real college when I had the chance.

Hey Terrance, I went to Ithaca College because I was looking into a communications degree. They really have a kick ass communications & physical therapy program but it (college) just wasn't for me. It was very expensive too and with the loans I could've just started an online biz.

I hear you in thinking about your daughter. A backup plan is always a good thing and with a degree it is easier to open some doors. Plus getting skills like webmastering or networking from someone who knows it will save you learning time...

How's Atlanta? I am 2 states north of you...

LD

i can understand that you guys prefer freedom and instant bucks over commitments and working (learning) your ass out without making money with it BUT if you would persist a little longer at college you will start to see the extremely high value of it. ofcourse you can learn yourself an awfull amount of practical knowledge, but the stuff that really makes you look beyond, the stuff that REALLY helps you further in your thinking processes, that stuff you will discover in college. and you when you are just working you will learn some practical thingies but you always remain at about the same level in your thinkingprocesses...

so in short; you definately need college to bring yourself to a seriously higher level. it's all about the way of thinking...

Sorry,I know your advice and thinking is honest and with positive intention (from your point of view) but the many experiences and people I have had the priviledge to associate with have nothing to do with college. And these are the things which have truly built me as a person. What will really matter is what you do with your life after college. And for someone like me it is what I have done with my life since 19. Your way of thinking is very narrow minded. Did you learn that in college?

I am not trying to attack you but I do take a strong offense to your statements. Making broad statements as you do is actually very ignorant because everyone is coming from different points and everyone is "built" differently. Trust me if a person does not appreciate the academic system as it currently operates it won't help them one bit. Trust me I know. Again this is all just my opinion but in my case it is fact...

Peace,
LD

LD, I used to live in Atlanta, and they had cheap apartments, only like 800 a month, so I was just commenting on that.

Thatiminator has a point, but I learn much more quickly on my own, than in a classroom atmosphere. Then again, I know I will get more out of being instructed etc, so I have decided that it's best for me to go back now while I still have free time on my hands. The most important thing for me is that I have an actual certificate and degree, so I can feel more secure about my future...
