software to make thumbnails on server?

i need a program that will take a full size image and make a thumbnail of specific size for displaying on a page. id prefer it to save the thumbnails for later use but i dunno much about this kind of technology.

anyone know what im talkin about that can help me out here?

I don't recommend that way. You can't choose jpeg filter, compression with that.

well its not for galleries. its for a nonadult project. people upload a picture via the web-based form, its stored in a directory, and when a certain php page is called, it needs to show thumbnails of pics that match a certain database call. i just dont wanna have to teach all these people how to make thumbnails of thier pics cuz theyll fuck it up http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif
