Read the Discworlds instead. They're much more fun. Get all of them.

"Dune", "Dune Messiah" and "Children of Dune". Dune is an excellent book. The other two I didn't enjoy nearly as much and IMO the movie sucked.

Someone else recommended Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Totally different kind of story: fantasy + humor. But they are some of the best books ever and I always have an order in as soon as I hear a new one is due.

I read all of them and I used to have them all. Definately worth buying Mag.

i didn't care for the dune books myself. just my opinion, but i found them grim, impersonal (i mean the feeling of author to reader AND character to character) and predictable if you read enough fantasy/scifi.

for personable fantasy, i prefer dave eddings first series starting with pawn of prophecy... discworld is kewl, as is early piers anthony.

hey - i'm spamming books!

I just watched the 5 hour long movie, it's pretty nice.. but I felt some details were off http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif hehe... so I wanna read the book..

but right now, I'm on to the last 2 books of the Lords of The Rings... THe Return of the King, book 5-6.... Fuck, so far these have to be the BEST books I ever read..

Rod, books are usually better than the movies... MUCH more details... you can imagina all the worlds and situation in your head... then you watch the movie to see how someone else saw it http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I thought I heard somebody mention "Dune" one of the greatest SF classics. They are all worth a read through at least once. I've read "Dune" & "The Children of Dune" twice while the others only once.

"Discworld" is very different & lighthearted. If you want another serious SF classic, read all the "Foundation" books. Basically, anything by Asimov, Bradbury & Heinlein are classics http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

You could probably download the books from http://bearshare.com or http://neo-modus.com.

If you are interested in fantasy I highly recommend Terry Goodkind's "Wizard's First Rule" it's awesome!!

I read the whole book in one sitting, just couldn't put it down, even for meals.

I was gonna suggest LOTR, but I thought someone looking for Dune must have read those already. Guess I was wrong. They are definitely the best books I've ever read (I hope you didnt miss out on reading The Hobbit before reading the trilogy). Jamdin's Foundation suggestion is also a classic. Plus Asimov's Robot series, Foundation and Robots merge at the end, which is a joy. I grew up on these books, Lord of the Rings, Foundation, Wind in the Willows... Reading the Harry Potter books brought back a whiff of those years. Discworld is simply incomparable - I've never read anything that matches the brilliant satire and deep philosophy hidden in those books - reading them is a topsy-turvy adrenaline rush, one second I'm laughing and the next the book gets so deep that I feel I'm reading Freud. The Discworld games are wonderful too, there are 3 of them, though they simply cant compete with the books. If you liked LOTR, you'll probably love Discworld as well.

I lurk in the shadows of this board mostly http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/wink.gif

Harry Potter books brought back the magic in today's books. The series sparked an interesting witch debate much like Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game sparked the demon debate when it first came out.

hey, jamdin, weren't you the mzb fan?

did you ever do the lloyd alexander "book of three" series? supposedly for children, but pretty nice writing... his later stuff is more sophisticated, but that series had serious character development http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yep, that's me. "Mists of Avalon" is coming on TNT this month.

I haven't found any Lloyd Alexander's books yet. One of these days, I'm going to have to order some (I've got a big list growing). Fantasy always seems to be classified for children anymore when in truth all can enjoy it.

Mists of Avalon: best fantasy book ever written.

Dune: best Sci Fi ever written.
Heretics of Dune & Dune Chapterhouse are the best two.

Frank Herberts son released two more prequals to dune, both good reading if you liked the original series. Also, the son says he found Frank's unpublished manuscript for the book after "Dune Chapterhouse" that should be great when it comes.

If you don't read books, you're leaving a lot of knowledge on the table.
