any comments on cobaltweb? Is it true they are up only 10% of the time? If so, any other similarly priced hosting companies?

You get what you pay for... in CobaltWeb's case you get even less... they aren't down quite that much, but for me it was ridiculous. They continue to try and bill me and I canceled my account 2 months ago. Don't take my word for it, try 'em for a month and you'll see.

Which you did not pay. You told us why, we properly closed your account, you did not pay a cent.<br /><br />So this makes me wonder why you need to mention this again and again. You did not loose anything.<br /><br />Every time our name is mentioned here, we are bashed. Strange... competitors ? jealous webmasters ? While our uptime is extremely well, our prices are *the* lowest in the industry and we provide good support.<br /><br />Again, let me close with : how sad.<br /><br />Carl<br />CobaltWeb

Also, I don't see who spread the word about our '10% uptime'. Again, I'm thinking of competitors. The truth is that, with our agressively priced packages, we are welcoming new customers every day. Most of them are having 100% uptime since months. If I read about other hosts' downtime, I can only be proud.<br /><br />But I understand that it's hard to fight against a competitor with such low prices. And that's why these rumours are spread. Let's be honest. It's funny.<br /><br />Carl<br />CobaltWeb

Uptime is extremely well? You mean like how I joined and my site went down the next day? Just a server problem eh? Then it was back up for two days, and went down for 4 days because of a failed CPU? A failed CPU... I have 12 computers over 10 years old, I've owned many more and in all my days I've never had a failed CPU. My current supplier has *NEVER* had a failed CPU. 2 failed hard drives, and 3 failed power supplies, but never a CPU. So ok, shit happens I'll believe you on that one... failed CPU, heh. Then my site was up for 3 days, and then all DNS failed. Your entire site was down for 2 days. No explanantion, unanswered emails, so I cancel my account. I get a payment request via paypal the next month and decline. I post a compliant to you on this board and immedietely get another payment request. You're still sending me payment requests, so now I guess you'll pawn off that with some lame excuse too, eh? Just admit it, your service sucks so you offer cheap prices to hook people looking for a deal.

You were switched to another box which hasn't been down since then. DNS failure ? Never ever.<br />No explanation ? Have you ever asked for one ? I can only see ticket number 1331. Responded to and resolved in 30 hours; control panel down, Apache still running. Your site was alive.<br />Let me be fair here, I believe you need another ISP. Other people on the same server never complained. If a server is down, then all sites on it are down as well. Strange. And we monitor the servers 24/24 with 5 minute intervals and pager and SMS alerts. Those are logged. But I didn't find the downtime you were talking about...<br />Still sending PayPal requests ? Hmmm... found nothing in the PayPal logs.<br /><br />Why are you making this all up ???<br />Story closed. This ain't making sense anymore...<br /><br />Carl

Correction : "I can only see ticket number 1331. Responded to and resolved in 30 hours" should have been 30 minutes.

Direct from my paypal log<br /><br />Mar 11, 2002 Bill From Carl DE BOOM / CobaltWeb Canceled 10.63 0.00 10.63 <br /><br />Don't try to bullshit me. I emailed you three times and you ignored every single one. It wasn't a big deal for me because I just wanted to see how well the rackshack servers worked. I'm trying to save the people who it would be a big deal for, from the headache.

KH,<br /><br />I really don't see your point. This is your actual nature, copied from a mail from you :<br />"Promptly FUCK OFF - I already told you I canceled this account. Send me<br />another of these goddamn requests and my lawyer will be contacting you<br />regarding this harrassment."<br /><br />Your account can only be closed if you follow our Terms and Conditions to close it. Our Sales person may have made mistakes because your account was not officially closed, but were you actually charged one cent ?<br /><br />And if you're trying to warn future customers, then we have a whole bunch of happy customers who can confirm that our services are great. How come I knew who you were immediately after reading your reply ? Because we have very very few people leaving us. Maybe they are blind for our 10% uptime.<br />And what about your downtime claims ? Downtime can also be caused on your side...<br /><br />You just signed up with a subdomain, ***.cobaltweb.com, smallest plan, just to be able to bash us. Please admit.<br /><br />Topic closed.<br /><br />Carl

I didn't sign up to bash you, I signed up to see how well the rackshack servers held up. I would be singing your praises had you actually offered decent services. Actually I guess I should thank you, as you saved me the $1000 I would have ended up wasting getting my servers through rackshack. I signed up for a subdomain so I didn't have to wait for DNS to resolve. What's the point of changing my nameservers over just for a test?<br /><br />You really should quit wasting your time on boards and let your 'happy customers' stand up for you... oh wait, I haven't met one yet... <img border="0" alt="[ROTFLMAO]" title="" src="graemlins/rotflmao.gif" />

I take it that these are Cobalt RAQ servers you are using or are they a different type?

Could that cobalt server handle movie downloads, 80-100GB per day?

Actually, we found out some time after the registration. But still, we believe that it's a great marketing name, even for people who are unaware of the RAQ's.<br />Nowadays, Cobalt RAQ's are not the right servers to use for massive hosting. They are good servers for most purposes, intended for people with less Linux experience, which is a great target audience. But we use Intel and AMD servers with 1Ghz or faster processors as they better suit our needs.<br /><br />Rgds,<br />Carl

That's one of the reasons I stand by them, they've done well for me. You might want to talk to toker if you're gonna push that much bandwidth, I'm sure he can get you quite a good deal with a beefy server.

Carl,<br />what are server specs you are using for that "monster deal". Do you support .htaccess (need only for error redirection, hotlink protection) on these "monster deals"? Are you using compaq/10mb plan from RS (wondering because of overage $)? Could you PM me IP of one of that monster deal servers (wonŽt abuse, IŽd like to run ping / tracert from several locations)? When do you plan to add new servers?<br />Feel free to PM answer to any of these questions if it suits you.<br />Thanks.<br />J.

They are content sites that average 15,000 hits a month.

I've had a failed CPU. It was from one of those damn Slot A thunderbird chips with the 751(i think) chipset on MB. All 7 thunderbird CPUs could not handle opengl software or just burned up(PC temp alarm went off, ...the whole deal). Switched to classic slot A and everthing worked fine. (socket a seems to work fine also..) I HATE SLOT A T-birds their great paper weights though.
I use cobalt hosting and is very satisfied with them, there havent been any downtime(that I notiched), and their tech support is friendly and fast
