Has anyone ever tried to write a car off on their taxes. I was just wondering, because i will be moving in the summer and Im going to buy a car before I leave. I will be making several 500 mile trips from home to meet with my buisness parters, so I plan on writing the car off as a biz expense. Has anyone tried this? Ive heard that you can write off a car that you lease completely but if you purchase it, you can only write off upto $30,000. Any replies arer greatly appreciated! =)

you can only write off the whole car if you only use it for business, not for personal.

you can write off every business mile you drive, plus any car expenses (including, i believe, percentage of purchase) that is directly business related.

What do you mean percentage of purchase. I mean I could write off 25% of a $30,000 car? Or something like that?

yea, if you used it 25% of the time for business use... but check with the accountant,.

Hey, what if I rented out officespace and had to goto an office everyday to work on my sites. Then could I write most (if not all) o the car off? Just Curious =)

yes. we go to a p.o. box every 3 days. it is 9 miles round trip. we got 1089 miles of car expenses off that trip.

if you use your car 50% of the time for business, you can write off 50% of the car, but have an accountant do it unless you have lots of time.

i tried to do some of this with the help of the irs. i spend untold hours on hold as they passed me from department to department. twice they had to have a specialist call me back.

eventually they can tell you everything you need to know, but wow! the wait!
