i have been making vid clips using packaged software that come with my viao computer(dvgate and premier 5.1le) It produces .avi files that are not easily readable on the net. I would like to find a third party software that would convert the clips from avi to mpeg. Does anybody know of any such soft ware or any other solution to my problem. I tried the demo of premier 6 and it will not do it.

That's why in the age of divX we all make *.avi's b/c they are smaller than mpg's.

Why do you specifically want mpegs?

good question. I want something that is easily seen by most peoples viewer. I can see the avi on my viao computer beatifully with media player. I can down load those same videos and see them from my avs marketing site. the problem is no one else can see them because they were made useing a sony codec which is what the bundeled software on my computer required. <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by ComaToast:

Its probably that you have divX codecs and surfers don't. I don't know
what codecs that bundle installs but the problem is going to be this...

Surfers (as a rule) hate installing "things" on their computers. Especially
if its from a website suggesting that they do. Heck, most surfers won't
even go to the IE menu under TOOLS and update their ruddy OS and browser.

You can try beating it through their heads about divX and "getting with" the
high video quality of the new era but, it is impossible to move these ppl to
upgrade machines.

They think "oh this is a virus trick" or "this is going to screw up my computer".
Most of us who try and work with "unknowledged end users" know how no
matter what you say to get these ppl upgrade they just turn off their hearing
and want to keep things "just-the-way-they-are". They live in fear.

They (surfers) are use to downloading mpg's from the Web. Thats what they
have always done, thats what they will always do. If you upload a divX'd mpg
they can't run it without the codec therefore they will never know the quality
that a divX mpg has to offer thus they will never see divX in mpg or avi.

To serve as a webmaster offering movie clips via website you are stuck in the old
codec format. You will just simple loose surfers formatting a divX codec mpg.

The answer? I will never know. What I do know is these end users are stead-fast
in their beliefs. They are destined to have crappy vid for the rest of their lives.
What does work on converting them is letting them see divX run on another
machine other than their own. They look and say "wow, how come that looks
so clear?...it looks like DVD quality". But alone surfing the Web they will never
convert. Hell, I still have a hard time trying to convince ppl that leasing vehicles
is the only way to buy a car/truck. Doesn't matter how much sense it makes most
ppl will not listen.

DivX would allow webmasters less BW consumption and end users higher quality.
A better world for both...its very frustrating for me personally I have had to
refuse a few good contracts because of the "video fear factor".

My guess is the avi's you are throwing into TMPGenc are divX'd and perhaps you
missed the codec selection part and they were made into MPEG1 mpgs. Therefore
your 2Mb avi goes into a 10Mb mpg.

Thanks for the great reply. First off i am a confirmed leaser. I also look for high residual values to keep my payments lower. I am astounded by the number of car dealers that trumpet the value of a low residual so that you don't have to pay much if you want to buy it. Shit I don't want to buy it. I want to use it up totally within the terms of the lease when it is under warranty and then I want to walk away. I have found a simple, fast and even possibly elegant solution. Btw I had to use a sony codec with the bundled software. The solution: I open the vid file in Premier6. I save as an avi file and voila it is viewable on others machines, or at least was on a machine at my web designers when she tried it. Thanks for your help and your take on the intransigence and fear of many surfers. I am a fairly recent surfer myself, but I am well travelled and do not fear new experiences. I love the net. It is a trip and I love the immediacy of the info acquistion to solve problems like this. I also love working here from Montreal, with a designer using a script from a guy in calcutta , hosting on a server in Syracuse and having content made by a gal in Amsterdam. <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by ComaToast:
