View Full Version : dmoz?
If anyone had success with them, please share your opinion. wondering if it's worth the time with all their 'corrupted' editors. lol
Back when I first started doing free sites I allways submitted to DMOZ with a 90% success rate. The trick is to make sure your sites are clean, with a prominent enter link on the main page, I always had 30pics and also try to get some content that looks a bit different/better than the stuff out there right now.
thanks Rich
what can you expect from listing there, like 50 hits a day?
also if you change keywords and descriptors after listing, will they penalize you?

You don't get that many hits per day from DMOZ, I get less than 20 hits per pay per site submitted. But that's not the point. It's important to get listed with DMOZ because other search engines will also list your site(s) in their directories. Thus, you won't get alot of traffic from DMOZ, but you'll do from other search engines because of DMOZ.
As Rich stated, just built clean "DMOZ" sites, which are very similar to "Link Lists" free sites (i.e. min. 20 pics, no popup hell, no console hell, no banner farm, no cj) and you shouldn't have any problem getting listed.

do you need 30 pics for dmoz sites now
At first you'll be lucky if you get 10 hits per day, after about a month you can get upwards of 100-200 per day as the engines that parse the ODP keep adding you over time.
Why would you want to change your metas after listing? If you do them right the first time changing them can only hurt you in the longrun.
Bigdog, I'm not sure if you NEED 30 pics now, the last minimum I knew of was 20, but 30 can give you an extra boost with the reviewer.
and how long does it take to get listed there?

I forgot to say that first you need to make sure there's an editor for the type of site you're submitting to. Or else it may take a bit longer.

For example go to this URL:
http://dmoz.org/Adult/Image_Galleries/Hardcore/Free/A/
Look at the bottom of the page, You'll see that it says "this category needs an editor".
Thus, for this gategory, it will take you more than two week to get listed. Unless, you're lucky and the above editor pick up your site.

the most important thing is to submit to DMOZ...so much newbie traffic in there,,
prolly the best traffic is from there
after carefully submitting for around 4 months i get a steady 1000 hits from the network of sites,,,especially plenty hits of that good ole AOL traffic
20 pics is the minimum but if you can afford it better throw in a few more and make it 30 or so. So if it doesn't get listed and you send your whining mails to higer up editors you have a better position ("...hell, I even had more pics than the minimum...")

and how do you convert with that traffic on avarage basis?!
about how many sites have you got registered to get 1000 hits??(from DMOZ alone, or is this total??)
Ok, DMOZ, in itself, does not give you any real traffic to speak of. This is just the organization that maintains the directory.
The real traffic comes from the sites that use DMOZ's directory as their own search engine. DMOZ is really just the website for what's called the ODP, Open Directory Project. Most sites can use the content for free providing the copyrights stay intact, or pay a lincense and brand them as your own.
Several Sites use the ODP, you can check out the entire list here:
http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/Searching/Directories/Open_Directory_Project/Sites_Using_ODP_Data/
The bigger players in that list include places like netscape, AOL, and Hotbot...
THIS is where the traffic comes from, and as far as conversion ratios, I personally have gotten better than 1:150 on AOL traffic from my dmoz listings.
