View Full Version : How much time to recover from server downtime?

This afternoon, my host went down for 20 minutes (very unusual). It took 4 hours for traffic levels to return to normal on all sites.

My question is this.

What kind of down times have people had in the past? And how long did it take to recover?

Also, Does anyone have any ideas on how to more permanize our traffic flow? To make us less susceptible to a downed line or something.

Maybe we can all brainstorm and work on something together. There's some room for cooperation here -- things that might help everyone along.

Ahh i love these topics http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hard links are a VERY solid way to make your traffic more stable. Basically any link where your trade partner isn't sending based on what you send them http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/wink.gif

Topsite listing, Gallery listing, SE's, Link sites.. are all good for this.

If you have a tight group of traders you might try perm linking to each other to help prevent such harsh losses when you have down time. I find that CJ webmasters aren't very good to trade perm links with cause they will remove your link if you don't send back EXACTLLY what they sent you. Like said if your in a tight trader group this'll work very good however.

I have had a downtime once of over 2 hours
(yuck) and it took over 3 days to get back
to normal http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/frown.gif

Also a couple of 20-30 min. downtimes, took
at least a day to get back if not more...

Ron has a very good point, a group of
people/friends that perm. links would make a steady
traffic base, I guess they could work on
where they put the links to make the perm.
trade more fair in terms of traffic.

Also, having a lot of your own cj sites, if a
site goes down and needs a traffic boost you
dont have to rely on others, you can send
some traffic from your own sites to get the
site back and rocking.

I am going for the last solution http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

And if those sites are on same server and server goes down ???
Then you still need first solution http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Oh yeah you got me there http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Maybe not put more than 1 or 2 sites on the
same host or at least work something out
so the sites are not all on the same server
at the host...

But it's still a good idea to spread your
sites out over more than one hosting
company imho...

Well, i have had several downtimes the past few months.

At the time my server went down for 4hours, it took apr. 2-3 hours to get back to normal.

Just a few weeks ago, my server went entirely down for 2days (that's bad). It took me apr. 1½day to get back to almost normal, and i'm still working on the recovery.

The only thing that bothers me, is that my income for this month SUCK bigtime.
It's only half of normal.... The real bad thing about downtimes :-(

Wow .. 2 days .. but if you can recover from that in just a few days .. it's not as bad as i thought.

I have two servers hosted in the same place.

I think I need to relocate one somewhere else to minimize potential damage.

Shit back in June I had downtime and all kinds of problems for about 4 days when I switched to my dedicated server. The last 2 days I was on my old host they were 1/2 down so most people couclnt get to my site, then when I did get my dedicated I had all kinds of troubles getting the damn scripts to work, Thanks to Tim or I would have never fugured it out. During that time my 2 sites went from 98k (UCJ stats) and 80k (UCJ stats) to 50k and 30k, and I still to this day never figured out how to get recovered. But of course that was the same week that the whole CJ scene seemed to totally collapse too.

KimJ,
That downtime would have only occured AFTER you left SexTracker. You never had those troubles UNTIL you went in search of cheaper bandwidth.

Now, if take into consideration the amount of money you have lost with downtime on your new cheaper host...wouldn't it have been smarter to stay where the bandwidth was stable and the superior staff was there for you 24/7???

We are still here and our servers are up and running when you get tired of recreating your traffic deals, links and scripts that get screwed every time your server goes down.

Call me, I'll take care of you so you no longer have these problems.

I'm new to script traffic trading, I used to do it manually on a weekly basis over a year back. Those were small traffic sites from 2K to 15K per day. Based on sexlist stats I used to modify the listings. Only if a site went down for 2 days or more would that affect the owner, and we usually helped the affected person get back up by putting their link up on top.

How do these scripts work that a 2 hour downtime can affect the traffic so greatly? I'm looking into buying some trading scripts and am trying to understand how they work.

for about 4 years, we've had our sites on at least two very different locations - it rocks!

Kathi, i pay $600 for a 1.5 mbps line, and i see my site load faster than sextracker. and i pay - what? about 1/3 the price. spam is not a beautiful thing. if you have to nag someone about your hosting, maybe better through email?

Basschick,

Is that a burstable line? I am currently on a 2.2 mbs burstable and sometimes I get this wierd spikes in my bandwidth and I go over, then I have to pay double for my bandwidth. I believe I need to go with a capped line very soon. Hit me up on icq please.
