What should the avg thumb size be able to be compressed to to limit bandwidth?

Depends on the original quality but i normally do 15% on thumbs after the content has already been compressed about 10-15% and the smaller the thumb the more you can go.

i have most on 120-200 @1-2kb

try Arles Image Creater. its one of the best out there.

don't always trade clarity/quality for BW...

1Kb more can make a whole lot of a difference..

in arles? it's somewhere in the image property options...
