Candid Hosting seems to be a good company. I wouldn't host with someone that doesn't have a good reputation. A lot of big companies are using Candid and that is always a good sign. They have some people that a very helpful over there.

well sorry to point out how wrong you are Jamie

AWI is hosted on Cogent and it loads like a bullet and i have never seen it down :)

i will say tho cogent techs are dumb shits but the bandwidth is as good as any provider....

we have dedicated bw from cogent and qwest and with testing that we have been doing for 2 months now the cogent has come out quickier for america and qwest come out abit quickier for world wide eitherway cogent is a good BGP filler its so cheap you might as well add it as one more backup :)

HeLiS,

Cogent built their own fiber optic network here in the US, and their internal network is pretty damn good. They have no presence in europe thats why qwest takes all of your foreign routes. They are also having a hard time making peering arangments here in the us. I think they are currently routing traffic via mae and above net. Another funny thing is that they are privatly owned and they lost $28 million and made $90k in revenue. I think most hosts mentioned in this post earned more this year ;). But if you guys are doing bgp there is nothing wrong with cogent even if they do go out of business which will happen very soon you still got your other lines. Putting your business completely on cogent is scary. Check out this article about them you might find it intresting

Verio lost $777 million on revenue of $328 million last year.

And not looking worse this year.

Verio Tuesday said that the company would slash 750 jobs and close approximately 25 data centers and offices.

I think you will be hard pressed to find any net providers making money right now.

hehe our company is smart all of cogent lines are insured if cogent go down our policy will allow us to get the same dedicated GigE lines from any provider in the US so if cogent goes under it will just be a bonus really because we will get the same price but have the power places like QWEST, WorldCom and Level3 offer

so yep it will be good to see if cogent lasts or not but from our talks already cogent are not giving GigE lines out anymore which is already a dodgey sign

They aren't giving out any more GIGE lines in some areas because they have run out of capacity. It's as simple as that. They can only have 4 GIGE customers per city/area (2 OC-48s) because the network is non oversubscribed.
Also, the $90k revenue was from the first six months of this year. They had hardly any city lit at that time.
Now, they've almost finished their build-out in most major areas (California is almost fully lit and there is nearly no more free capacity in California alone which means they sold so much).

Cogent also has some great financers who are going to give them more funds if necessary. I am sure next year they will increase their network capacity per metro area. Their overall national network capacity is already bigger than many of the other networks of the so-called 'big' carriers ( 80gbps ).

Re: Peering

Cogent has a good peering agreement with Above.net which has one of the best networks world-wide. Their european connectivity is great to say the least. We've got a lot of customers from Europe and I haven't had a single one complain about the speed of our network.
They also recently acquired Netrail which brings them peering agreements with Level 3 and globalcenter. In some areas they already peer directly with each other (Dallas for instance).
I think they have a great potential and are around for the long term. It's understandable that competitors who have long-term agreements with the 'big' carriers want to claim they have a better network, they are with a stable company etc.

The devil take the hindmost.
