Many people seem to register domains such as p-o-r-n.com,g-a-y-s.com etc. . Aren't these domains just worthless ? I cannot imagine that they get any type-ins.

There are many types of traffic and when you work any of them correctly you can make money. Type-ins aren't the only way to go...

I agree with Kimmykim, although names such as those make it harder for users to remember, most traffic comes from links or from a person who already has you in their favorites. (thus eliminating the need to remember a tough URL). With soooooo many methods of creating traffic, the domain name has taken a back seat to sound marketing techniques.
