Counters Saying Bookmarks

i've been checking my referer stats out from my web counters (sextracker and sexhound)
and noticed an extremely high number of bookmarks which i know can't be true...Who the hell wants to bookmark a cj site..
Well anyways i just wanted to know how they determine this..besides just typing the url on the browser..

We also have a lot of bookmarks reported by Sextracker.

I suspect the AOL browser isn't carrying the REFERER variable, which would cause this. As NickD said, being unable to determine the referer of a hit, Sextracker reports it as a bookmark.

I've compared the number of hits I'm receiving from AOL with the number of bookmarks Sextracker is reporting, and these numbers are very similar.

Maybe I'm wrong too, I'm not sure. Anyone got a better explanation?

well I know that if your getting exit traffic to your site... sextracker/hitbox will count most of exit traffic as bookmark... and also untracked hits!

Anyone still following their bookmarkers? .. i get a LOT .. but once again, who is bookmarking CJ's?

I think that people bookmark them, before they click anything .. just 'cause .. it looks like something real good .. but still never come back.

One site of mine had 221 IE bookmarks yesterday (pulled the favicon image) but only 2 people accessed from their bookmarks. Probably they forgot it was a cj and promptly erased it. http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/wink.gif

Hi Guys. A little trick i've learned on sextracker is to check the (unknown origin) hits. That is a good number to check and see if your bookmarks are growing. It isn't your amount of bookmarks but it is co-related. I've checked on cj sites it is real low. On high quality bookmarks sites it is 1000+. Hope this helps.

I believe people with java disabled are referred as bookmarkers too.

same with most traffic that is sent from a javascript, it usually doesn't have any refferal info.

Sorry, didn't explain the favicon thing.

Is you have access logs, look for the number of times "favicon" is accessed. IE tries to grab this file every time you bookmark.

It seems AOL has problems with referrers when its in a new window.

I wrote a perl script which reads my error log from the day before. It looks for unique favicon.ico calls (sometimes, there are about 3 calls from the same ip) and then multiplies this with 1.3 to get the total bookmarks. I think the factor 1.3 is quite good because it says that there are 70% IE users on my site. I had the idea for this script when I saw a post from cowboysurfers regarding this topic who said 1.5 is a good factor to calculate the total bookmarks, I'm not sure which one's better...

my site currently gets 5k daily and here are the bookmarks stats:

I just started this yesterday, but you can see, that since I added a tgp to my site on 21/02 the bookmarks jumped up a lot.

the stats are updated every 25 hours via cron. check them daily if you like ;-)

i think you are right with this. if the first impression is good they are more likely to bookmark.

I also think you can increase bookmarks on your site when you put a link that says something like: Click here to bookmarks this site. For an example look at http://fastfreesexpics.com On the top is button, so it's really easy for the user to bookmark. Netscape or other browsers will get a "press CTRL+D" info.
