View Full Version : IMPORTANT EVERYONE READ !
Look there is another site today who "mistakenly"screwed some of us out of hits..Now i dont think it was intentional but still it is hurting us alot.
How did it happen? People sending there 404 traffic to there script.
Sending 404 traffic to script in itself is not bad. But you have to be EXTRA careful cause if you have a broken image guess what!
Personally between my 2 sites today i lost almost 5000 visitors to this shit
Nick lost i believe almost 8000
Look people if you are gonna start doing risky shit, you have to be 100 times more careful.
Personally I think you should send your sites 404 just back to your site.
Just imagine this
Nick sends his 404 to his script then he has a broken img...
With his size he could suck us dry...
The site that sucked my hits today was very small..Imagine if Nick or I did it..
Is it cheating or not to send you 404 traffic direct to the script?
I think it's pretty stupid to send it direct to your script. Today I directed my OUT traffic to my CJ site. NOT THE SCRIPT BUT THE SITE. And my out clicks raised with like 10K even though I only send like 5K-7K. You can get a lot more if you just send it to the site and not the script. I also think it would be far to risky to send it direct to your script because what if you made 1 typo or something. that would cost a lot of webmasters a lot of hits :-/
Anyway. Happy trading :-)

after this week, even after the most minor of all edits, i check my html source/info about 5x just to make sure of no screwups. i dont know how many other people this applies to, but i now hotlink all my images from another one of my servers. so when you go through the page 'info' you can tell nice n simple where the img's are coming from and if they're there or not. it makes the task of catching slipups that much faster and the risk of 404 redirects within the page MUCH lower. i've learned that just being 'careful' isn't enough.

I would mean that directing your 404 traffic direct to your out scipt would be the same as cheating because the surfer did not click anything.
If I see a site where I see they they call their out script without surfers clicking anything I just lower their ratio to 0.4 :-)

due,
i dont think u understand what the problem here is. redirecting your 404's has to do with the 'ancient chinese secret' (another post made about 1-2 weeks ago) http://209.67.52.186/ubb/smile.gif the surfer is still clicking on something...

I agree with yellofello,
Lemme say that we are using the 404 trick intensively on our site and I'll explain why.
With the 404 redirecting to your script, it is easy to track which links users are clicking on your site because if each link is pointing to a different url, your cgi can catch up which url the user tried to access and do some tracking on which links are clicked the most - very useful. Thus, you don't need anymore to put onMouseOver in your code.
Also, if a surfer tries to access an non-existing URL, yes the out script will be called and the surfer won't have clicked anywhere. BUT, the referer var won't be set, your site will receive a free hit!
I must agree with the fact that we must be really careful with broken links. But it's very easy to know if you made a mistake with the awesome out stats you'll have.
You must be aware that more and more sites are going to use that trick in the future.
Just my 2 cents http://209.67.52.186/ubb/smile.gif

Hi all,
Dan's post explain a lot about why someone would use this trick, but I really discourage anyone to use this kind of trick unless he has a lot of experience with html and unix servers. It is really easy to do a mistake, and you must check at least 5 times every time you make a change to make sure everything's working fine. As most people said, already three webmasters made this mistake in less than a week. We are lucky that those web sites did not have huge amount of traffic, that could have killed us all. I for one will not accept "mistake" as an excuse anymore for this kind of error. With all that has been posted about it and all the warnings, one can not tell anymore that he did not re-checked his page a couple of times to see if everything was right. I hope I won't see anyone else post here to beg for pardon, saying he made a mistake. Everyone's aware of the problem and everyone has to take the correct measures on his site not to arm others. If you want to be sure you won't be this person, just don't use this technique, it will save you lot of headaches. If you do use it, be warned http://209.67.52.186/ubb/smile.gif
It's nice to forgive someone for a mistake, but we can't always be as forgiving, especially for the same mistake repeated over and over again...

Okay it's not cheating then :-)
I get better results directing it to my CJ and not the out script. I think don't have any count on how many 404's I have... The last 9 hours I send out around 8K in 404 traffic. From my other sites :-)

The way to get around this is very simple. Sites not doing this way, should be given second thought when trading with. Dont trade with a site that redirects its 404s from the folder containing his pages
I have all my files in my root directory, my root .htaccess redirects to index.html.
Then I have 3 empty folders ,tgp, teen, pics thoose .htaccess go to the script. so I can send my links there and it ll go thru the script,. without any worries of "mistaken" 404s or broken images.
That way of doing it is 100% legit, however these sites sending all there 404 to the script is just bullshit. And that has been proven over the past 5 days

Yellofellow, id prefer sites to use that idea. I dont wanna have my sites fucked again, by dick heads who dont know what the fuck they are doing. I seem to be deleating more sites than adding these days...
