The fastest is a relative term. In order to have your pages load the fastest, your best bet would be something like akamai, or even better our network edge technology. It takes the graphics from the closest server geographically to the person, enabling the pages to load as fast as possible.

As for good speed, stick with providers that buy bandwidth from Tier 1 providers, and have a nice clean network.

Also you would want to make sure that they run at less then 50-75% of capacity.

also helps if the hosting company knows what they are doing. the best equipment connected to the fastest backbone is worthless if not in the right hands.

It differs for what use you want it, Generally fast is fast, but still if you want to stream videos over the world you need some more stuff than if you just want to send a lot of pics.

Most important is package loss. Package loss is what kills speed, not so much ping times. Ofcourse ping times are important too, but package loss is more important.

Plus you've to look where your customers come from. Regular porn sites have about 50% US surfers, so in that case it does not matter to host them in US or Europe, because it's 50/50.

Generally everyone that has a couple of DIRECT transits, and enough capacity should be very fast. Providing that they use good transits ofcourse :)

If you've any questions, you can icq me on 2227869.

If you would like to signup with my hosting, you can contact me on the same number.

I don't know about dedicated, but we use www.hiendservers.com (http://www.hiendservers.com) and they are really fast.
www.xxxhostit.com (http://www.xxxhostit.com) is also very good, but again, i can't comment on dedicated.

www.candidhosting.com (http://www.candidhosting.com) They host a ton of the big free sites, as well as all of ARS's paysites and 2 of the largest freehosting programs on the net. Including the telco dailer network...

well said.
speed is the relative term and depends on geographical location of the surfer and status of their isp providers. What could be lighting fast for one guy could be dead slow for another if his route to your server has some fucked up hop in the middle.

Ping is also any good if you ping from multiple ping gateways in the world, this will give you better idea, rather than just pinging only from your home.

yes, I think progod is right...

get a good server some place you trust among the best place...

say dynamichosting, isprime, likewhoa, etc... some poeople you can trust and treat you well... that's key #1..

and then, the akamai type of stuff is the shit..

but it's quite expensive if I'm right... like a thousand/mbps or something?

you would basically host main pages there, not the actual galleries of a paysite for example...

correct me if I'm wrong progod, you know more than I do..

I don't use them, just heard their service..

HiEndMedia (http://www.hiendmedia.com) has been the shit for me. THey have always responded to my needs and the service as far as download speed has been great. Highly recomended.

Thats correct, there are two problems with akamai.. The first is the price, they are pretty damn expensive. The second is its not exactly automatic. You have to tell it what to cache.

We also have a solution similiar that we use. Using it is actually cheaper in most cases, and its automatic. So you get the best of both words. We don't have 10,000 servers like akamai, we just pick a few of the fastest backbones.
