Whats with those 2 networks?
I know verio is better, but what's with cogent?
What are differences between those networks?

Dreamer,

You've just mentioned both edges of the ISP world
Verio is a Tier-1 provider, they own their own circuits and their quality is extreme. But they are 'very' expensive.
Cogent is a reseller. They just lease other ISP's circuits and make peering arrangements. They offer very cheap deals, and lots of people doubt about their reliability. To Europe, for example, they are slow. Also, there's the risk of Cogent going out of business every week.
While most of the time they are decent, I would not rely on Cogent only for hosting adult sites. Make sure that those connections are at least redundant and backed by some of the better providers, like Verio.

Of course, just my 2 cents.

Carl

Both verio and cogent are very cheap... And I don't think either one is technically tier1.

Verio is defintely better then cogent, but they have had their share of problems as well.

Both cogent and verio get 75% of their bandwidth from peering.
Cogent is fine, why is everyone bitching about it? It's got some downtime, but for the price they offer, you can have 3 backup servers to handle the problems

Both of them claim to be Tier1's. Obviously you noticed the difference in price. If uptime and latency is important to you, things like streaming...you would use Verio, if you just wish to bang galleries, and you dont care for the user put them on cogent. If you want to run a paysite, and dont want broadband users canceling cuz of speed, run Verio.

Another issue: no one knows how long Cogent will last, Verio is owned by NTT, largest telecommunications company in the world.

We offer our customers both options, whichever one they choose, they still get our support, with Cogent though, we do not offer a 100% uptime guarantee.
level3 is in worse case than cogent since they loose way more money each month. These companies play HUGE games and have very strong financial supports. Long term projects. I dont think cogent will go away.
level 3 loosing money cause they seem to be outdated motherlovers. Couple of month ago I had talks with their rep about getting their line and they told me pretty funny thing - the guy believed GLBX filed for bankruptcy cause they didn't charge customers enough money. So he wanted to hit me with his "cool" prices.

Well all I could say - just give me time to locate your customers in my area. Haha..

Cogent seems to be around for few of years, and blow away the competition, but they still have not expanded beyond metropolitan areas, which is not exactly a good indication.
The time will show..

Most providers are sitting in a bucket of shit right now. Big networks and no one on them, and the billions it took to build them is eating their pocketbooks on the interest payments. Enjoy cogent while they are around as their price is great for pic/movie galleries. As for who will be here in 1 year?....its anyones guess.

verio has very few of their own lines, they buy a lot of space on uunets backbone.

quote:
Originally posted by Cobalt:
Dreamer,

You've just mentioned both edges of the ISP world
Verio is a Tier-1 provider, they own their own circuits and their quality is extreme. Cogent is only slow for us about 3 hours out of a week, but never any downtime. Other than that, they are great for the price.

But, if you are going to go with a host who uses cogent, make sure that he has a network with multiple providers and can hook you up within seconds if cogent DOES go out of business anytime soon. I do not feel that is going to happen.

- Brad
