If changes are made to htttpd.conf, does the server have to be restarted?

I am in the process of adding more domains.

Indeed, httpd.conf is one of Apache's corefiles and only loaded when Apache is started.
On most systems, you will restart Apache through
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart

Regards;
Carl

Is restarting the server a big deal? I would think it should only take about 10 seconds right?

The only thing that worries me is if it doesn't restart right away, and I have to explain to the boss why we are losing thousands of our search engine hits.

Should I be that concerned?

As long as the syntax is correct in the conf file then the process should take less than 10 seconds. If there is an error starting check your syslog for details on how to correct it. Most surfers will simply push refresh if they get broken images etc. in which case if your syntax is correct they will get the image, link, page, etc with out much delay. Restarts are not that big of a deal. Large downtime is...

There is no need to reboot the server. Just restart apache.. Cobalt explained how do this. Although.. you will most likely need to be root.

Apache is the http server, I was simply stating that it must be restarted. I hope we did not imply that you needed to restart the entire system... Just the webserver (httpd)
Thanks for the clarification though I did not even realize my words could be interpreted that way.

You didn't imply, I just assumed. Thanks for the clarification.
