I feel like a tool for even asking this, but I guess I've gotta start somewhere...

I'm using the free version of CJ Pro (of course) and I guess I'm a little confused as to how it keeps track of referrers and how to set up trades.

If I go to xxx.com and submit a link trade on their site, do I first need to make an account for them on my site? I mean, if they send hits to my root URL I won't be able to track them, right? So I need them to send hits to /cgi-bin/cjpro/cjproin.cgi?XXX.COM but I don't know if there's a way to do this from the admin script or not.

Am I making this more complicated than it needs to be? Please help.

Thanks,
Jack

Are you using CJPro 1.0 or later? If it is the later version, then you can send the hits to your root domain. http://www.yoursite.com and then it will hit the index.cgi and forward to your real site http://www.yoursite.com/yourcj.html

If you are using the older version, then when someone makes a trade with you, the script will generate a link like you stated. You know about this link, so I will asume you have the older version.

So, to make a trade with a site do this. Pretend that you are the owner of the other site, put in the name of the site and a url, you can just put in http://www.ass.com for now. Fill out the rest of your form and hit submit. Your script will give you a link, say http://www.yoursite.com/cgi-bin/cj/cjproin?ass.com

Now copy that url, go to the site you want to trade with, say http://www.starteens.com and go to their trade page. Fill in the form, where it says "send hits to?" or what ever, copy the link in there.. fill out the rest and hit submit.

Their script will give you a url that you need to send hits to. Copy that url and go back to your site, go to your admin page and click on the user name you made before. Click edit this account, paste in the url that you got, over the fake one you made moments ago, click save or whatever, and your done making that trade.

That was a mouth full, hope you understand.

Yes, it makes sense; that's what I originally thought I would have to do anyway.

I do have the latest version of CJPro with root URL tracking, but the insallation docs don't ever tell you how to set this feature up.

Thanks for your help!
Jack

Haha, no but good guess. Actually Jack Foley is George Clooney's character in "Out of Sight", which is based on the book by Elmore Leonard.
