I have just received this spam:

---
The latest domain name extension has arrived .SEX!!! It's the fresh ,new,
exciting web address that is taking the world by storm.

Who wants to be .com when you can now be .SEX
---

Plus there was the URL where can you "register" .sex domain.
I'm not going to post it here, first because it would be spam and second, I don't want people to be screwed (but I think many people received that spam :-( They charge $59 for one registration, the website looks proffesional and trustworthy. But hell, IANA did NOT approve anything apart from .biz and .info lately, so they CAN'T register these domains. So it's COMPLETE SCAM!
Damn it!
I hope someone will stop these fuckers soon.

Oh really?? I have received 2 copies of this today (probably for 2 of my currently registered domains, I haven't checked as I was pissed)
Damn, this is bad...
I bet they are making shitloads of money on this. The worst thing is that they are making this money not from totally stupid people or something... But if someone who does not exactly know how does all this work, what is IANA etc. sees their website, he can really think the .sex TLD does exist...
Aaah, whatever... But hopefully many people will read this and will know that it's bullshit.

I do not think that it is a scam.
They can register these domains but not all browsers and isps support them.
Take a look at http://www.new.net for details.

there is a company wich is going to replace ICANN and allready large parts of new-york, australia, north and south carolina

and also some isp's in holland support them.

also .web .porn .celebs .celeb .celebrity and so on will be made available

i think you are going to hear a lot of these guys around november / december this year. once they wll start releasing the .porn addres

the .celebs addres and .web are also allready working.

In holland most isp's are going to support them. not the owners of the .sex are the owners of this whole new routing system. but it is possible it is going to replace ICANN. there allready is a large case going on in Australia between the icann and the organisation.

It defenitly is not a scam. and i think about 1 year most of the isp will start using the new routing system instead of the one provided by the ICANN.

i am not the expert of this. i know this because i knwo the owners of the .porn .celebs .celeb and the .celebrity TLD's

I allread bought 50 of them first hand :-))
i know the overall company where you can register your own ."whatever" like for instance ".raiden" will open its websites very soon.

ill let you guys know.

and NO this is not the system wich you have to download a piece of software or use someone elses dns servers.

they are working hard to convince every isp to use their routing instead of the ICANN (wch is extremely slow with TLD's wich pisses off isp's).

It is going to be big for sure.
(at least i hope with my domains...:-))

Thanks Raiden,

We don't know this guy from the .sex TLD either. But we do know that there will be a second global root system with many new TLDs available soon. All Traditional TLDs (such as .com .net .org .mil .gov and .int and the country TLDs (as appoved by ICANN) will keep on working as ususal. But this new root is capable to support many more new TLDs and more important these TLDS do not have to wait many years to get approved by ICANN anymore.

As this shall be a major leap forward for the TLD registry.

We will keep you informed when we have more information about this subject.

Technically speaking, ANYONE can sell ANY domain extension, and it will work in limited cases (don't know if any of you were here a couple years ago when Robin Nixon from Sexshare had TLDNS going but that is a case in point that you.can have.anything to.resolve) --

The issue is the actually resolution of the extensions and the widespread use of the dns servers needed to resolve the names. By either downloading an exe or manually modifying your dns entries in your browser (or entire network if you're a large company with many workstations or an isp who wants its clients to be able to see the extensions) the extensions then become viewable from the browser itself.

Furthermore, in order for the extensions to be worth anything, you have to have a critical mass of people able to see the domain extensions, by using this alternate dns resolution. A few hundred or even a few hundred thousand people don't make a critical mass, you need millions.

Now where the real conflicts start to come into play is in the very resolution of the domains. Once the dns entries in the users computer have been modified then the new resolution server has control over EVERYTHING that resolves -- meaning that in essence, someone could take a yahoo.com or a sex.com and resolve it to something other than the actual site and no one would know the difference who hadn't seen the real sites.

Last but not least we come to the fact that if ICANN (or whatever body is acting as ICANN) decides to authorize a new extension, say .sex or .biz, then you have conflicting owners of the domain names, with the authorized dns resolution taking precedence over the bootleg registrations. However, we still go back to the issue of who's actually resolving the names...
