Well today I tripped over my laptop cable and the LCD screen totally cracked.

I can not see anything on the screen now and it's totally useless. I have to use an external monitor to see anything.

I have heard in the past that it's not worth replacing the LCD panel. Does this still hold true for now?

most likely... how old is it?

It's 1 year old.

I have been told that it costs about $500 to replace the screen.

I'd buy a new one really -- if you bought it and its not a Dell, Gateway, etc, just get them to deduct the cost of a new hd from the price and swap yours -- chances are that the drop will show effects on the board soon as well, and then you'll really need a new one.

Well I went and tried using it with an external monitor and it works fine.

You can buy an LCD and replace it pretty easily for like $150
