I have a job, and I can assure that if you learn this industry, it wouldn't be difficult to live off the money you earn in year.
Anyways, I'm expecting to quit my job soon though.

When I started in the adult biz I was a bartender during the week nights, and a bouncer on the weekends at a club.
I was working 8 hours at the bar/club every night, and then working as long as I could stay awake during the day learning the xxx biz...
If you are serious about making it in this biz, you can still do it... It took me 8 months or so before I could quit my job/jobs...
Now its hard for me to imagine what it's like to go to work for someone else.. (Honestly, its kinda a scary thought)
Sometimes I miss be in the bar biz though, wild (and very lose) women and drunken fights do have their appeal. http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
The thing that I see most is people trying part-time for a couple months and then quiting because they are not rich...
This is not a get rich quick business! (Not anymore anyway) It takes a lot of hours...

Crap, if I was a bartender, I would keep my job. Anyways, a lot of adult webmasters are part time computer engineers and stuff like that, and already make 20-30k a year. If you have a job like that, then your best bet is to keep it for a while before you try to go on your own. I work a shit job, don't get paid enough, and all that money is spent on websites. So I basically have to make it online, or I'll either have to live with my parents forever, or live on welfare http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Heheh, Demomwolfe you sound like me..
When I started I was bartending and going to school..
I have NO fucking clue how I found my friends Email, but I remember emailing her about making money to pay for my tuition..
she taught me a little about starting up a website and there it began...
HA! I remember thinking I could make 850 000 off of galleries in the first 4 months IF I got a script like TGSW working.. this was a bit before TGSW so I thought it was genius..
hehe, as you can imagine I overshot that one by a bit http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif but I kept on and worked and worked and worked..
fuck I worked.....listened to Sharky Live everyday, for like 6 hours while I was working, and then worked another 10 on top of that...and did school for 4-6 hours...
Extreme sleep deprivation and extreme weight loss..
women, if yuo want to lose weight, fuck those diet pills or anything, become an adult webmaster!! It is great..
I am a guy tho, but I lose almost 25 pounds in 3 months..it was sickening..I guess it is kinda logical seeing as I didn't eat..
I got an office in the school so I could work more..and I worked nad worked and worked..and bartended....but that was only 3 days of the week so not too bad...
and when that first 11.00 cheque came in from CastleComm I was stoked... it was pretty amazing..
hell when my first 100.00 cheque came from..god who was it? some sponser, who knows, I creamed my pants..
12 months trying to live off 400.00 a month was fun..probably another contributor to my weight loss was the inability to afford food http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif Potatoes and bulk pasta...
Eventually quit school, and worked the full 22 hours a day... and still made 400 a month...but then one day it just all clicked..and all those months of listened to Dokk, and Sharky and researching and learning and doing everything wrong, in order to find out how to do it right payed off.. and it all started to work..
I say the most important thing in this biz are Hard Work and the people you know and learn to love..
hell if it wasn't for Bangwang, or Traci or half of my ICQ list I wouldn't be here..
don't underestimate the power of a 5 minute chat on ICQ... and never stop networking, or helping people.. I measure my success not by the money I make but by the people I help..
and we will only succeed in the future if we continue to help each other. "Together we stand, Divided we fall" ...
and yes I live off porn completely...
Go Niche or go home http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif hehe, well that is what I live by anyways...
sorry for the autobiography, like you wanted to hear it..but TOO BAD!!! I can't stop writting huge messages all of a sudden http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif
take care, and always remember to smile..

Good question, often wondered the same thing.
Started senior year of college for extra beer money in 98. XPics, 6 cents per unique... whoo hoo. I got my first 50 dollar check and thought I had hit the fucking jackpot. Two months later I payed my rent and had extra left over for weed. Jesus, life couldn't have been any sweeter.
Then, like someone above stated, it all clicked. I have not worked a normal 9 to 5 job in 3 and a half years, and hopefully I never will have to again. The thought of it makes me want to start crying. Although, staying up for three days in a row crying cause server is down is not very fun either... but it beats the fuck out of waking up at 8 am and working for some schmuck!
So... three years, 3 servers, 3 tgp's, 3 paysites, and two top 50's later, all is well. Very well. (cept for the 20 lbs I have gained)
Viva la porno.

Two years ago after my Ph.D. scholarship expired and I still had half my thesis to write I looked for a way to make some quick cash to support myself. Two months later I was making more from my websites than I ever would with my doctorate as an Engineer. A few months later I wrote UCJ Version 1 for my own websites. I'm now about to put another application to delay my thesis deadline. Though the way things are going I very much doubt I'll ever finish it. http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

This has turned out to be a great message thread...
Unconnected: Hey bud, hows it going? Its been a long time since we've had one of our long chats on ICQ... I will get my ICQ up and running again and maybe we can catch up...
When I quit my jos and went full time I moved about 150 miles away... it took 6 weeks to get my fucking mail (My new post office blameed my old one, and the old one blamed the new one... bastards)... so, I went on the cheapo diet also, top romen, potatoes and rice... ARGH... Funny thing though, I gained a shitload of weight instead of losing it! heh heh heh
Labret- Xpics... Awww yes, I do remember them... Those were the days man... I had a 6 picture webpage that I updated daily and had over 100,000 hits a day.... Then being the dumbass that I was I quit the biz for a chick.... needless to say, that chick is gone, got a new chick and she runs her own sites with me! heheheh
While we are thinking of the past, anyone remember CyberThrill Casino? Bastards...
Have a good one all...

Cyberthrill, hell yeah I remember them.
Was it 10 cents per unique or 14? I cant remember... I do know this. I promoted those bastards (like everyone else did back then) and made a good grand or so off of them before checks stopped coming. They ended up owing me a couple grand before I gave up on trying to get it. Man they were pricks.
I know a guy who img src'd them (back when it worked) to the tune of several thousand, so I guess in the long run they got theirs.
My first sponsor was .01 per unique. Some Canadian company with a really bad pay site.
Then I moved onto Serge's programs, even though he shaved the living shit out of you, checks always arrived on time. But then one day I pissed him off by criticizing his piss poor english on Netpond and he dropped me. aahahaha God his stats system was just fucking pathetic... totally archaic.
Sample Serge stats (if I remember correctly)
2/15/98 *************** 248
2/16/98 ******************** 456
2/17/98 ************ 188
Thats it. On a plain ass html page. You used to be able to see everyones stats with his system, god it was hilarious. ahahahaah Things have come a looooong way.

It's too bad xpics isn't still around. Those morons,.....
I remember they used to let you redirect traffic to them and you would still get .18 cents.
But back in '97 '98 everybody was charging there credit cards like crazy.

This has to be one of the best threads I have read...good call on it... This is an awesome business.. One of my closest friends/associates has his Masters in Commerce and was running the most succesful labling company for cosmetics bottles in america.. we are talking 50+ employees, nice car, nice home the works eh...Sold it, and got into this biz, and now makes 10 times as much doing 1/10th the work... If anyone thinks this is a business to get in for easy cash(which is why 90% of us got into it I bet) then you are in for the hard and rude shock that I got the first 3 months..
Well actually I take that back..anyone who didn't start 4-5 years ago is in for a rude shock..back then, fuck, the money was laughably easy..
It is still now, but it takes a whole shitload of work to get to that point where it is laughable..
I don't know about you guys, but I am almost in hysteria when I go to the PO box and collect the cheques..the thought that someone would pay me that outrageous amount of money for doing something I love so much is funnier than shit...
But this is a great business..and as much shit as we take from the general public, it is worth every name I have been called..because they can keep their fucking 9-5, 10.00 an hour job, while I get to spend that time with my children, when/if I have em...
fuck, they can suck my cock...I love what I do, I love myself, and I LOVE the people I work with, because I will say this, you will NOT find a group of better people in any other job in the world..you guys truly all do deserve a round of applause... Thanks..

fuck, i used to work like all the time - sleep? what was that? every webmaster i knew worked all the time, and we didn't mind at all http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif
i remember our first click-through sponsor - the dirty bird's nest (what a name!). 2 cents per click. stats updated once a day - they told you how many clicks you sent - period. i thought it was a waste of time. till our first check from them - wow! i discovered that 2 cents adds up http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif
then we started promoting assmeat *LOL* and suddenly we were bringing in $600 from 2 sponsors, twice a month, plus phone sex. $3000+ a month, and going up.
used to make another $1500 every two weeks from adultcheck from one site that signed up under us, plus another few hundred from our one crappy avs site from all search engine traffic.
but our host wasn't up to our traffic and we had to move after we all but stopped his server dead - luckily we moved to janey.net, where we still have a couple sites.
i knew brian from xpics before xpics was a sponsor - he was an ass to me, so i never even tried their program.
hey! who remembers amateurhardcore?

ha!
that was a funny concept...
I remember going 6 months on 2 hours of sleep a day..holy shit did the world make a lot more sense the first day I slept a full 12 hours after that..but totally eh..
I didn't mind..
I just worked and worked..and you know what?
the main thing that drove me on, and the biggest thing that kept me up all those nights was having EVERYONE tell me that I was going to fail..
That I was either a.) a pervert or b.) was wasting my time...
Fuck, I just loved to write HTML...I mean sure it was a luxury at first to look at gorgeous naked women all day long, but that novelty wore off after the 3 concecutive month of those same 'babes' making me a measly 400 bux http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
hehe, and look at me now.. those babes were quickly replaced with studs, hunks, and twinks..so those people can no longer call me a perv..hehe, I am just a homosexual now in there eyes..
but i have long since stopped caring what those underachieving, limited thinking peons think...because I know who I am and that is what matters..
but it sure as hell was a journey to get to where I am right now..80% of the work in this biz is learning as far as I am concerned..
at least in the first 1-2 years..
gotta love it http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

i remember all the fun... pissing with serge at ynot when it was nothing more than a simple message board... toying with tim... everyone going psycho anytime someone raised their clickthru payout by a half cent. was quite fun.
one of the highlights for me was standing on the roof of a hotel in miami beach at 2 in the morning talking to fantasyman, dirtyjack, dravyk, kaiser and some others while a photographer shot a teen lesbian couple behind us. i heard the whole history of cybererotica and a number of other big guys. very interesting and very motivating.
its certainly harder now than it was 4 years ago. and itll be even harder 4 years from now. like any good newbie im doing tgps & free sites & not making a dime yet. in fact im losing money. but damn im giving away some nice porn! hahaha http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/confused.gif
anyway im optimistic. certainly takes a lot of hard work and anyone whos afraid of that should just go back to flippin burgers. 20 hours days, 2 very cheap meals a day, and yes, im living with my parents. that right there is motivation enough http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

yeah DW, I do remmember Cyberthrill... they were what brought me into this game... I was in the warez game back then, and that was all I saw... so I said, well, I'm gonna try them...

That is very good advice..something I have lived around since I started.. A great man, and my hero(bangwang) once said "why great one awesome big sites when you can have 10 smaller ones and make 5 times the money...The thing with this business is that it is SO easy to expand..and the more you expand the more you make. unlike the real world your overhead doesn't double when you make another site.. just another 30 GB a month on the server...and with a 1.5 m/bit you can have 10 of those before you have to upgrade.
Wolf: 9 years??!! Jesus christ, that takes the cake for anything I have ever heard.. 9 years?!?! I was still stealing G rated bikini pics off my local BBS's 9 years ago..

I've only been doing this since May of 2000. I was one of the many dumbasses that saw/heard that you could make a million by simply putting up pics of naked girls. I've lived with strippers for the last 4 - 5 years (which could actually help me in the future...maybe) & thought I was in for a cake walk! I learned quick that it's not that easy, but became addicted!
I still work a reguler job (with my family...UGH!), but hopefully I can break away soon! I'm a wanna-be writer & I'm hoping I can do this & support myself so I can WRITE!
To be honest...I actually didn't even know how to turn on a computer 2 years ago (seriously!). I dropped every college computer class cuz I was SO embarassed that I didn't know where the "turn-on" switch was. Pretty pathetic, huh!? I would actually walk out of class in the middle with the teacher calling my name. It was bad. BUT...then I was forced to learn for what I do now.
Of course now that I said that you guys are probably gonna fuck with me, but I can offer FULL-ON big city entertainment if you ever come to Chi-town! >>Shit man, that is an amazing life...You are my first webmaster I know of who was at least going for their PH.D .. Very impressive..<<
I've got a Ph.D. (in Business).
I ran a golf manufacturing company until I sold it off and started teaching at a local university when some of my students turned me on to the web. I ran some very softcore sites as a hobby until I saw I was making $2k per month for only five or ten hours a week. So during the summer of 1998, I switched full time to the net with 70% of my sites being adult. The bottom line is that I pulled in the mid-six figures last year working out of my house (although spending time on a more conventional business this year has been affecting my monthly gross.)
It is doable, and heck of a lot easier than amost other business models.

We've all been there before..so no worries..it gets better..but the thing that 90% of the people that quit this biz can't do is be able to see the results 12 months- 12 years down the road...and that is what you have to hold on to, and persist through the down times..because they fucking suck, but the rewards in the end is far worth it..

the most common newbie mistakes that i see people make:
1. putting too many sponsors on their pages, confusing the surfers and breaking up the page flow.
2. trying sponsors that sound too good to be true - over and over (i know a blind program that pays 6 cents a second page click, because their enter link is almost impossible to find under a page full of ads and 3 enter consoles!)
3. using sponsors in a different niche than their sites or galleries (ie lesbian sponsor on a teen page, or bdsm sponsor on a general hardcore page)
4. using too many words - either just sitting on the webpage or in ads. i've seen people put ads on galleries often that are a full paragraph - and the surfers never read them http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif
5. too many outgoing links. i see this with new sites where the guy is getting under 1000 hits a day and joins every power top 50 that requires 200 hits to show on their page, thereby sending away all his hits and getting nothing back. also too many counters, all at the top of the page.
6. making sites/pages that appeal to their own personal sexuality. i know a guy that just keeps writing the same link on his gallery even though it NEVER makes money. i also know a guy that makes avs sites with amateurs - he ALWAYS writes them as if the girl is talking to the surfer, they never sell anything, and he keeps writing them.
when your links don't work change them - not just a couple words - the whole fucking format!
and my favorite-
7. using links that don't use trigger words. don't say "FREE XXX VIDEOS" say "TEEN SLUT FUCKED IN THE ASS". don't explain to them why they should join the site - tell them what they get in a way that makes their dicks hard.

Basschick said one big mistake of webmasters is:
"6. making sites/pages that appeal to their own personal sexuality."
Great piece of advice!
I was shanghaied by a guy who had attended one of my seminars at IA2000 wanting to know what content he should try. So I pointed out some ideas at the content-provider booths, and he oohed and awed over them until I showed him some gay content. He jumped back, got upset, told me he wasn't gay, then stalked off in a huff.
Money is money. And money being earned at twink sites, at Asian midget sites, at cucmber dildo sites, or at Latina mature BBW sites all spend exactly the same.
This is a business, and you give the customer what they want. And that may or may not be waht you like yourself.

I remember a few years ago when I did phone sex I could talk about ANYTHING to make the call last to really make the cash.. damn I was the girl that people referred to me when they couldn't do a call..... but then again I didn't have to look at pics to go along with the converstion!
I notice that NOW I have to enjoy what Iam selling.... I sell it better if I myself enjoy it.
I would have a problem making a bbw site...... I can't sell it very well because I don't find it appealing... Ohhhh look at her beautiful rolls? Ugh... So I try and stick to what I like, thankfully that is a enough to keep me busy without going into different areas that I don't enjoy.

Marina,
You are probably right when you talk about phone sex because your own thoughts and feelings will most likely leak out into your words and tone.
But with a website, all you do is change out the pictures, learn the keywords associated with the subject, and churn out a new site.
I actually spend too much time on each site and really try and make them match a theme, but many webmasters churn out site after cookie-cutter site, and for them, it really shouldn't matter what the content is.
While stretching the point, I make a lot of money selling high-quality cookware over the net. And I hate cheese with a passion. But I still sell fondue pots.
If it weren't a matter of making a living, I would only do very softcore, artistic sites. This is what I like, and this is what I like to shoot. (An example would be http://www.artistic-nudes.net .)
But since I want to continue to pay for the mortgage, I have a wide arrange of sites, from the freaky and perverse to the ethnic niche and everything in between.

well being a non cookie cutter type of girl most of the time.... I also spend way too much time on my sites... when I could also be making hundred's of shitty cookie cutter sites too! But still I notice that when I make a thumbnail gallery, for example, you can tell when I enjoy the *theme* and I see that also in my stats to the sposnor!
I prefer to work with what I like since there is always an endless amount of work I could do with let's say blowjobs.... I could make 100's of galleries, free sites, and avs sites displaying blowjobs..... then move on to anal..... keeping busy for a long time... and this is something surfers also look for and enjoy... without ever having to touch something I'm not interested in.... http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif
btw... are you the same Corter from dmoz? http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yea, I don't do cookie-cutters myself. Sometimes, though, I shoot myself in the foot by trying too hard. Once, I spent almost 4 hours looking for just the right palm tree image for a site on island girls, a site which has made me maybe $300 total over the last year.
And yep, that's me.
