well, the most important thing about the advertisements is that you change the registry entry "AutoUpdate" to "No".

the ads don't bother me, they have reinforced the theory that if you ignore them enough, you stop seeing that they are there.

Plus, i don't want to play with hacked .dll files, such a file could be hacked which could open up a backdoor to your computer - i'm not saying this version does, but it _could_.

BUT it's MY pc and if I don't want the ads on there then I won't have them on there... they are very intrusive to my pc, they eat my resources and whatever else they can find to eat. I leave the nonintrusive ones, I don't mind those... but the ones on my my Message windows crash me alot because they look for the ads and when they can't find them, they go nuts and crash my icq.

So yeah I am a lying thief..... but it's MY pc and I don't want to use them. LOL If they popup an add in my system messages or whereever, that's fine, but not on every damn window I type in, it's a bit of an overkill in my opinion.

Looks like we're all a bunch of lying thieves in here. Bandwidth thieves, icq cracking thiefs, dialer misguiding thieves. Pages with links saying 'Britney Nude' leading to another cj. Maybe its all the lying and theiving we do in this biz that makes us argue so strongly about our honesty and strike down anyone who is the least bit dishonest. Wonder if any of us actually started out honest, using purchased content, purchased software, not breaking any freehost rules. I admit i am not, but from what i know, a dll file is collection of functions that can be "included" when you write another function.

In perl, i'd do this with a "use module_name" statement.

If there was a function called "start_icq" or something, someone could edit the function, to transparently send passwords to an email or another icq, or to open a port on your computer for another program to connect to, or send your icq messages to another system, or any other malicious thing you can think of.

I assume that the guy who has hacked the dll has removed the code that says "add_an_advert_here". But equally, is it not a possibility that he has added a "fuck with their computer" piece of code?

The answer is yes, it is.

Simply scanning the file with an AV would not show such modifications as a virus.

I'm not being a scare-monger, i am pointing out that you are trusting the security of your machine, and hence perhaps your business to a person who you do not know, let alone trust!

All they would need to do would be to open up an ftp port to your computer and upload a S7 server for them to have complete unrestricted control over your computer.

That is one example, there are infinite ways they could screw with you - how about an unconditional formatting of all your drives? that i would imagine is one line of code they would need to add.

Don't want to spoil anybody's day but no amount of virus checking will ever detect a trojan in a dll.

Trojan defense suite is supposed to be the most powerful trojan detector on the world but even that wont find trojan headers until they have been added to the database. Trojan code does not have the same generic attributes that virus code has and makes them much harder to detect.

Wolfshade, i have not looked at the hacked dll, but have looked at my local dll.

Its a bunch of gobbledigook to me, no idea what language it is, but its obviously in a compliled form, and i would not know how to reverse engineer it to code to start with, let alone understanding the code that is there.

I know what your getting at and I don't want to be in the middle of a icq war BUT.

No amount of virus or trojan checking would detect anything until its been added to the database of known trojans (viruses are different)

It is a fact that there are more unknown trojans and viruses than known ones.

Unless you can reverse engineer and disassemble the dll for yourself you will never know.

Although it is very unlikely that any group would threaten its reputation by inserting trojans into their releases it has been known.

Though a trojan is hard to detect(but it can be done) it's easy to detect a leak.

Just check your outgoing connections.

Offcourse that does only tell you there is a leak but with a little common sense it should not be to hard to trace it to the infected file.

Ahh, Tam you shouldn't always trust your virus scanner. Richard has a VERY good point, and anyone not listening to him is a fool.

Just because the virus scanner says it's okay, doesn't mean it is.

I could write something up right now in C++ that'll do something lame like delete all your files from your hard drive, and the virus scanner won't detect a thing.

Virus scanners rely on a database of various "viral" strings to detect viruses. If I write a new piece of malicious code OR a modify an existing virus or trojan, the virus scanner would run by them and claim they are clean.

They are constantly updated, but if the person wrote a little dll like this, and it wasn't widespread than chances are that the scanner could go right past it.

Perhaps I misunderstand you want you say it was scanned and it's clean. Did you scan it with a virus scanner? Or did you scan it by hand with a hex editor?

Also on a side note. I think it's really stupid to go blocking ads on icq. Come on guys, do you like ad blocking software blocking banners on YOUR site?
