I have a major emergency - I had to format C: and I backed up all my files onto drive D

My partner did the format and installed Win2Kpro and now I have a major problem...

Drive D has no volume label and I cannot access it at all.
I got Nortons Utilities but even that won't help - it says the "Drive has no Volume Label would you like to reformat?"

All my sites back up , programs , emails and graphic design work , EVERYTHING except the content is backed up on that drive - and it's the ONLY copy- I dont' want to lose 5 years worth of work...

Pleez can anybody help me??

Try sticking it into another computer which doesn't have win2k on it. Win2k will likely wipe everything on C but I don't think it should affect D. Give that a shot

Yah go into control panel, under administrative tools, choose computer manager, then look at disk management.

Once you click there you should see the drive, then there should be an option to import that into win2k.

depens on what os you were running before, and if you used ntfs with the highest security. if if latter, i can only say good luck 128 bit.... no way
on the other hand, have you tried to mount it, run_MMC_addmodule_diskmangement and try to mount it.
but basicitly it sounds like your buddy F.... up, when he installed win2K, you also have the option to "fdisk" during install sooo...

There's a program called "Lost & Found" (not sure off the top of my head who makes it sorry).. it will recover data from any hard drive, even if the partition/s are completed rooted or the drive is nearly dead and won't pick up any other way. So I think that will easily restore all your stuff. Have no idea where you can grab a copy though sorry.

Honestly if its that valuable call a data recovery tech to come and recover the info and dont risk it. Look in the phone book there are tons of companies who sepecifically do data revovery for big companies and even home PCs.

before you do anything make an exact copy of your current disc, load up a freebsd disk and type in something like

dd bs=65536 if=/dev/ad0 of=/dev/ad1

then go experimenting.

http://ontrack.com/ bought up the rights to one of the worlds most powerful data recovery systems "Tiramisu" if your data is important i would contact them for advice and not attempt to recover anything yourself.
They also have online diagnostic software that can examine your system, or you can try to get a hold of a piece of software called "spinwrite" if you get really stuck I have both pieces of software I can send to you.
Just remember that even if it has been fdisked or formatted the data is still there, but in my opinion Ontrack is THE last word in data recovery.
