is it possible to create a .htaccess file for your own subdomain, so any 404 traffic that occurs from there can be redirected to a page i choose?

Most free hosts won't allow you to do it, since that's another good way to make an extra buck for them. and they usually control anything you can do with .htaccess from their httpd.conf because there are too many things you can do with .htaccess, like including SSI and so on, and they can't afford to run the risk ;o)
