View Full Version : What's Going On Here?

Hi Octane

Ok, I have to ask: why do so many webmasters here have a HUGE bug up their ass?

I can honestly say this board is too pissy lately. There is a noticable lack of tolerance for newbies, or anyone with a small post count. Even the off topic, casual threads have a hard edge to them. Maybe some of you guys need a vacation?

You know, you sign your name to a post, it tells people what kind of person you are. If all I ever see is someone being a nasty, smart mouthed jerk-off, pretty soon I just tend to think of that webmaster as a nasty, smart mouthed jerk-off. I am positive that I am not the only one who would see it that way.

I'm not saying we should all become mentor's, or fucking professors of porn. But I do think this board community could do with an increase of tolerance.

You don't like a post/thread? Fine. Don't reply.

You don't like another webmaster for some reason? Fine. That is natural. But don't waste the time to rip them a new asshole. Let it go, move on. post something you think might be informative, or amusing.

It's like that old saying, if you are pissed off, write down all your feelings, and then put the letter in a desk drawer. NEVER mail it. Chances are, in a short time, you won't feel so strongly, and would have regretted mailing the letter.

Well, when you post, you mail that letter out. For all the webmaster community to see. With your name signed to it.

I've seen so many people I met move on, and become very successful at what they do. Not everyone is a genius, and not everyone is a "stupid newbie". Try to remember that they are people, not just screen names.

I fully agree with you. I am the webmaster of 2 decent size sites. I do have a low post count because i dont post. I also recently signed up because there are a few things i wish to add. But, i have been reading this board for almost a year now. I have seen a large increase in hostility. If you dont like someone or what they say, then just move on. There is no reason to get into a pissing match about it. You are just wasting time because 95% of the time you dont get anywhere. It would also be wise to watch what you say to many newbies. One day they may become a major player. Everyone has to start out at one point or another as a newbie. The smart people are the ones who continue to grow over the years. All in all, i think people just need to be a little nicer to eachother.

Thants just my 2 cents

HI

Octane, i totaly agree with you. Okay honestly i must agree that im sometimes get a headack when i see a post, and two topics below is the same question but okay, some forget that we where all newbies once.
Okay, there where always people who can walk imiddiatly after the where born but most of us all had to learn that first... >;->

That was excellent.
Thank you for saying something that deserves the attention it's getting.

I'm a great believer in resource boards.
I work this business 24/7, so I don't get out much. LOL. Perhaps I should.
Being able to talk to like minded people about what we do can be a very positive experience.

When I see intolerance, I either don't post or I move on. If I make a mistake and it's gently pointed out to me, I will certainly do the backstroke; conversely, if I say something that someone thinks is worthwhile, it sure would be nice to be praised.

I've been in this business for several years now and I've mentored and been mentored. I still consider myself a newbie in many ways because there is always something to learn on these boards. Fresh ideas, new twists to old ideas. I will continue to read this board. I will possibly make some friends or at the very least, business acquaintences. I will endeavour to make no enemies.

I wish you all a great day. :-)

I agree to some extent what you say Steve, but there is only so many times one can answer the same question or listen to the same excuses for cheating/spamming.

I'll freely admit that i've lost patience/tolerance for newbies. Not because i'm a newbie-hater, but because the majority of the people who make the mistakes or ask the repetitive/stupid questions do not research their problem, they simply want the easy solution.

Using the boards is a tool for learning, i appreciate that, and so do many others who do help people when they ask questions.

If someone comes to me, with knowledge of how the biz works, with technical knowledge, and with the right attitude, i'm going to help them any way i can. If they come offering me a deal, all the better http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think it comes down to attitude and professionalism, at the end of the day.

Perhaps we should define what we mean when we say "newbie". Perhaps we should also consider alternative formats for websites like this - its obvious that a message board is not the most efficient way to educate people.

Perhaps a Frequently Asked Topics section could be included, or links to newbies resource sites?

Bah, why don't we all www.fucknewbies.com (http://www.fucknewbies.com) http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/tongue.gif

no offense rich, but this shouldn't have come out of your mouth....

I mean, our JOB is to freakin' moderate this board, and to HELP the newbies... this is the reason we are moderators.... we HAVE to answer newbies, we HAVE to give a helping hand....

I totally agree with steve here...

there is a place somebody that doesn't know about the porn biz needs to learn... we are a board, and this is what it's supposed to be...

anyways... anyone his idea...

hi octane, i agree with a lot of what you said, and i have never insulted anyone for asking a question and try to answer as a rule.

but we also have one newbie that asked for help and then spammed everyone that entered his site that you had to enter your email to enter.

i have gotten online after a day's sleep to find that someone asked a question, didn't get an answer right away, and got nasty because they didn't get an answer - the fact that a lot of us just didn't HAVE an answer didn't matter. we're required to answer - within a certain time limit, too!

i have also answered a few questions from a fairly large number of people to have them demand me to continue to answer them, and continue. some of them didn't take my initial advice, and now want my advice on things that i KNOW won't work, and just keep bugging me and bugging me.

makes it harder to want to answer people.

Hi Octane
08-24-2001, 09:52 PM
basschick, you made some good points. I mean, I agree - we do NOT owe it to anyone to give them advice, info, tips. Just because they found the board does not mean I am going to spill my guts, especially if they behave like a clown. but by the same token, I am not going to waste time pissing on them. I ignore and scroll down to another thread.

But, I mean - you never know when you are going to be face to face with someone from this biz. Do you really want to have somebody super pissed at you in your face? That is one thing about the web. Everyone is a bad-ass, and can kick Mike Tyson's butt.

And yes, you can lead a horse to water, but can't make it drink. If they blow off your advice, it's their loss. I mean, it took me what? 2 years to get Shap to build AVS sites LOL

I just think the attitude is harsh here, and it only hurts us all. Rocky is a guy I KNOW can offer some real gems. This guy has busted his ass for years to get where he is. But how many posts does he have? Not many. Why? Must be the atmosphere, aside from the fact he's busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.

I mean, it doesn't have to be a cyber coffee cafe, of the GFY board - but it would be cool to see this board rocking, and get some good ideas flowing thru here.

Good post Hi Octane.

You know, you should never look at how many posts someone has made. It's very easy to change an identity on a board. Some of us have been here for years but have only posted a few times. Never judge a book by its cover.

I agree with this but would also like to point something else out.

Back in the day when I was going to a "real" job in a brick and mortar I was the assistant manager of a well known restaurant. My manager used to treat me with the utmost respect #1 was because that was just the way his mother taught him...but #2 was he wanted to cover his ass.

He felt that anyone one his subordinates could at sometime in the future become his superior.

Now I was promoted and rewarded with my own store just one step away from becoming his supervisor. Now that never happened but was a definite possibility.

I guess the point is I'm not really concerned with who might kick my ass although I wouldn't want my ass kicked...lol, but I would be more concerned with pissing off someone who might end up being a very powerful and influential person in this business.

Because as we all know there is no sweeter revenge than success.

hi octane, it isn't about ignoring a thread. these people email and icq me - over and over and over - wanting me to fix everything for them.

i don't bitch them out, although i do try to lose them quick, but an awful lot of them seem to be the ones everyone here picks on. not all, but a fair amount.

steve its just the sign of the times,,,these last few months have been very frustrating..i think many of the previous regular posters is either to busy working harder or just quit...now since the regualers have gone thier has be a major influx of newbies on this board asking the same question,,causing alot of webmasters to express their frustration,,,,

i myself have been a guilty of it,,,
but i just tell it to them straight don't jazz it up way,,,while doing that ppl take it the wrong way thinking i am just telling them to quit, but actually telling them are they sure they want to get themselves into it...oh well we will just see how this will work out

Hi Octane
08-25-2001, 01:24 PM
Well, I'm not saying the guy is going to beat you down at a convention. But maybe, in 6 months, he's trading tour exit hits with your #1 sponsor, and has more stroke/pull than you do. It wouldn't take too much effort to fuck up your business at that point.

playa, basschick - really I am not poiniting my finger at anyone. I know this is NOT a newbie board, and it never has been one. For info hungry newbies, the best thing you can do is give them a link to a newbie board. I can think of three of them (Tom's, Netpond's, Voltar's) - where the people over there will be more inclined to put in the time to get them going.

And this past summer has been a doozy. I felt it. It surprised me. Last summer I was rocking, this summer squashed some ideas. So I can agree, it would be a good reason so many of us are a little crabby. But school just started, so let's turn it into a kick ass season.

I understand how busy everyone here can be. Trust me, I have so much on my plate, I often can't find the time to work on my own TGPs/free sites. And I'm as exciteable as anyone here - maybe more so LOL It's not like I'm some kind of robot - if I had people bugging me on ICQ to fix their site, I'm sure I'd be wondering what's wrong with their head.

Think of it this way beat you head in the wall till it hurts then tell me if you want to continue?

You tell these people do this dont do that and they just do what you advise them not to do anyway. Look at the sites opening ever day with 50 banners 20 million popups cheaters redirecting gallerys.

Im not going to help someone to steal traffic or anyone who opens a content site and does not have a license to do so. You have people who want meta tags and so many things that people pay big $$$ for yet they want it all for FREE.

We have search engines loaded with resources like meta tags, html, htaccess, and everything else but they just dont want to waste their time looking they want you to do it all for them.

Now if they want a successful site and no work then pay someone or else they can get up off their ass and do some research like many of us who been on here any amount of time have done.

I dont know what this post is really ment for but if you want a medal for newbee honor maybe you might want to ask tim.

I personally could care less how it cost in your area for a prostitute. That actually was a post on here at one time so you tell me what benifit that has for adult webmasters?

I don't spend my days teaching. I just said to send them to those boards that do. I also said that some guys have an attitude, like the one you just gave me.

If you read my posts, you'll see that I am not found of "hooker price sheet" threads, either. I just want this board to return to some kind of earlier glory. I'm not looking to put heat on Richard, or piss with you.

This place is becoming more like a kindergarten. There are just too many whining and downright abusive posts. You can make allowances for people being frustrated at the summer slowdown, but it's becoming tiresome here. If you can help someone out, don't post a reply, and if you have a problem with someone, deal with it as an adult, don't whine, it only reflects badly on you.

Now let's follow Hi Octane's advice and get back to work. http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/wink.gif

Maybe there should be some guidelines on what people ask and this might help us from sorting thru the how to get my girlfrind to give me head type shit.

If you cant get laid then go wack off is the point im makin as example.

I dont have a prob giving some imput and i have done alot of that but sometimes people need to get their head out their ass in my view.

Again i dont see why people expect me to type "meta tag optimization" in a search engine because they are to fuckin lazy. These people want everyones trade secrets and then after they dont make tons of cash they open a CJ site with banned raped and illegal in every other link.

I have spent hours helping people with layouts html scripts ect.. but people who will use it for a good purpose and actually try to do something to help themselves.

If you come on here and say i have a problem im tring to do such such then fine. These people just say ok i got a domain and a webpage now how do i make tons of money or traffic?

Most dont bother to learn html they dont bother to try differ things they just want the answers handed to them on a sliver platter. Yes it pisses me off because i have spent years and countless hours learning shit and then to just have a lazy fuck ask me to do their work.

This is my opinion and yes im sure most newbees will think im an asshole but im not worried i have plenty friends. If people on AWI think im an asshole it wont make me cry or anything.. http://bbs.adultwebmasterinfo.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Or perhaps an article on netiquette pointed out to newbies; I remember that when I first started posting on public boards at YNot there was an article about posting on boards which I read first.
Here is a similar article http://www.ynotnews.com/062200/page3.html

Another recommended use of time for a new webmaster serious about this business would be to read every article on this page
