View Full Version : Whats a domain worth ?
I really would like to know whats important to buy or sell a domain. Which kind of traffic uniques or hitsis important and are the hits important only on the main (one) page or on the whole site ? How can I calculate what my site is worth ?

there is or was a place that can appraise your domain name for you. I can't remember the URL but if I run across it, I'll post it for you.

SE rank with relevent keywords ads lots of value. Also TLD forget .uk and .this .that stick with .commers and .nets you can go alot further and add real value. One other thing domains that represent words like cars.com marijuana.com hold the heavy value as new surfers will look for stuff like this. The biggest thing is if nobody wants it then its worthless. Forget tring to use trademarks also research before you use anything that might be propritery property of somone else. Otherwise you will be paying them for the domain.

Forget it they charge more then it costs to register the name itself. Like $5 to join and $15 per each domain just to exagerate the numbers and put a big grin on your face while they go drop your cash in the bank.
Well I got two nice com domains but I wanna know what traffic is important the traffic on the whole site (all pages) or only on the main visited page
Well lets get specific:
I got about 2k uniques on the main site and about 3,5 k uniques on all sites without galleries what this may be worth

((Total # hits per month) * Income per hit) * 60 months) is how I value sites. It is the same as ((income per month) * 60 months) or ((daily income * 365 days) * 5 years) but everyone makes a different average per surfer and it is a common denominator everyone can work with.
I use the monthly and # years with an anuity (spelling) table to adjust for inflation on the 60 months so it give me today $$ values. If the last sentence makes no sense to you then just go with the above formula(s).
If you value your site at $60,000 per the above formula and someone else feels they would make $75,000 in the same 5 years then it is worth it to them to buy at your value. I feel it is also worth it to you to sell because 1) you dont know what is going to happen over the next 5 years and 2) the old saying '$60,000 in the hand is worth $120,000 of speculation' holds true (that's not really an old saying). It helps to know what type of traffic is being bought/sold.
Example:
You know that you get $25 for every 1 thousand SE visitors. You get 1 thousand visitors per day so you average $25 per day. So that's $9125 per year - 5 years would be $45625 in gross income.
These are basic principles taught in a 3000 level Finance class. I use 5 years because we really dont know and it would suck to try to value a domain on 20 years or longer. Actually that would probably be dumb since the WWW is less then 10 years old (I said WWW, not Internet).
The big problem is that everyone thinks their site is worth a million bucks even if they aren't making $100 per day off it. I saw a post a few minutes ago where the guy said his domain was worth $35k even though he had only received one $23 check on his traffic. Don't to dis the guy but if it's really worth $35k then he needs to sell it because he is loosing his shirt right now.

I have to agree... Keywords in SE traffic, and the refering traffic is what you need to look at..
TGP traffic = temp and next to worthless
Toplist traffic = good short term income UNLESS you work it everyday
Scripts on the site
Active user base/bookmark traffic
Page design = Did a kid write the page or does it have professional grafix
42nd Street Adult Emporium
http://www.42adult.com
Now I know what I make per year for the last 11 years (online since 1991) and I have made about 3x more each year, not including my outside ventures)
so your current monthly income should also look at your past 5 years (whatever) and the growth of the company.
If I was to sell 42nd Street Adult Emporium I would have to sell it WITHOUT my cash rev programs, I would however set up new accounts for the new webmaster, give them the entire domain name and images but I would need to keep that recurring income from my past sales.
Too many links in the SE's to give this domain up.. 78,000 a day avg
