How to make money with an optin email list?

I started a free membership site combined with an optin email list.

I already have over 8000 members and here is my problem.

I dont know how to make money with it. I already made som signups etc... but it is not more than about 15 - 20 cents per email which seems a little bit too few to me.

Can anyone help me with this?
Are there any palces where I can sell the ad spots in the emails?

What is the difference of single or double opt?

Single is when you ask for there confimation when they sign-up, double is when you send another in the mail just to make sure.... ie send a mail with verify link in it
